XPS 8960, boot from external drive with Windows 10 on it?

I have an external hard drive that I have removed from my old desktop. The drive has Windows 10 Home installed on it.  It is a clean installation; i.e., I reset and reinstalled Windows. The hard drive is installed in an external USB enclosure. I have tried the F12 option on reboot. I have tried the F2 option on reboot, which takes me to the BIOS settings. I have tried the Settings > Advanced Startup option, which takes me to the same screen as the F12 option on reboot. None of these attempts have allowed me to select and boot from the external USB drive. Is this type of operation no longer allowed? If it is, how do I accomplish booting from this USB drive with Windows 10 Home installed?

Thank you,

Andrew

I am not an expert by any means, I have read that Windows 10 and 11 will not boot when the OS is on an external drive.

A more knowledgable poster may be able to provide more advice.

Hope this helps

just plug an internal hdd with win 10 on it to an external hdd enclosure is not going to work simply.  your internal hdd was connected to sata port when OS was installed.  the pc would not boot from it when you move it to an external usb enclosure.

to boot from Win 10 o an external usb hdd, you can try first do a clean install of Win 10 on the external hdd directly:

The external hard drive must be connected to the USB port of the computer.

Next, go to Disk Management and wait a few seconds until all mapped drives are aligned. Now you need to format this external storage in the NTFS file system.

The next step is to download and install the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool. This can be obtained from the official Microsoft website. Once it is ready for use, open this program and click on "Create installation media." Next, follow the main recommendations of the program and as soon as the ISO function is offered, select it; then click on the "Save" button.

Then you need the WindowsToUSB program, which you can install also from the Internet

WinToUSB 2024 (also called Windows To USB) is the best free Windows To Go (WTG) Creator which allows you to install and run a fully-functional Windows on external hard drive

Having opened it, you need to select the “Browse For Folder” tab and the path where the Windows 10 ISO is located. Then clearly follow the recommendations to install the OS on an external device.
