XPS 8960, BIOS version 2.14 release

Dell BIOS version 2.14 was available on Dell support for the 8960 2 days ago I assume to address the issues with version 2.13 but it is not coming up when running Dell Update for some reason (installation instructions still manual via USB only?), I'm holding off for now to see if this too has any issues and like some others here am wary of manually updating. I'm surprised it isn't an update available via the usual update method which I believe it was supposed to address?

I did install 2.14 a couple of days ago and all seems good.

I've decided to always use the f12 Boot option, less chance of any issues that way.

Don't be too wary of doing it that way. It rally is quite straightforward.

Many thanks for your advice, I will try that, if anyone can confirm why but its not a critical update showing when I run Dell update so wondered if this version is not needed for my own 8960 system build, previously update has always shown all required updates.

Just saying, I've installed via Dell Support Assist and no problems whatsoever.

If you are having any problems with BIOS updates at any time, consider using the easy-to-follow steps reformatted from @RoHe 's suggestion. It's been successful EVERY TIME, and now it is just my go-to.

BIOS: Flash Drive Update

  1. Ready an empty (non-bootable) USB stick that's no larger than 8 GB. If using an older one,  format FAT32 >> (To do so: right-click on USB stick, select Format, and follow prompts -all data will be erased in process).
  2. Download the new BIOS .exe file (not the .rcv file) onto the formatted USB stick, eject it, and power off PC.
  3. With power fully off, plug the USB into PC and power on.
  4. Tap F12 when you see the Dell splash screen.
  5. Select BIOS Flash Update from the F12 menu.
  6. When the updater opens, select (highlight) the .exe file name on the USB stick. Press ENTER.
  7. Confirm old and new BIOS version info (typically in top left and right boxes).
  8. And finally, tab to the Flash Upgrade button and press ENTER to start.

Note: The PC will turn off and restart several times during the update. Leave it entirely alone, even if it looks like it's totally off and not doing anything.  When the update is complete, PC will automatically boot to your desktop.

@KBone Thank you for the  instructions, I see no mention  of turning  off or suspending  Bitlocker, does this  mean  it  is  not required to do so anymore?

@Jr101001

Were you able to get this resolved? Sorry to hear of the bad experience.

Just an update, I waited for the BIOS 2.14 update to appear within Dell Update and installed it from there without any issue and no problems since then. I have turned off the option for Dell updates to install automatically preferring to see what's released then I wait a few days to see if anyone posts problems, especially for any BIOS changes. The only driver I don't use from Dell is the video card driver for my NVIDA 4080 card, have always gone to NVIDA for that. Must be lucky but have had Dell XPS systems for about 15 yrs now without any major issues though I don't change or add anything from their original build specification.

@Jr101001 Sorry to hear that, mine installed without issue, might be worth unplugging any USB devices to see if problem clears then add one at a time, usually a driver or video card issue that causes this.

I dont know, if the problem ist solved, but since the last post I only had one blue screen. But compared to the 10 years bevor, that is a lot. I buy Dell PCs, because the hardware configuration ist optimized. I hope that the problem is now solved.
