XPS 8950, PSU rattle
XPS 8950
My PSU fan rattles like crazy. Have had two lengthy conversations with "support" on the phone and have gotten nowhere. The last one wanted to wipe out my OS and re-install it. I just want them to send a new PSU. How do I get them to just do that without all the frustrating nonsense? Just bought this thing in October of '22.

You must follow the Dell support agent troubleshooting steps. You have to make a video with sound showing the rattle to Dell support agents. The recording device should be the standard 1m/3.2ft distance from the PC chassis.

Dell should just ask whether a person is capable of replacing the fan himself or not
And if they are just send them a replacement fan assembly and be done with it.
Yall sold us defective part, own up to it and fix the issue .
Cusromer shouldnt have to pay for your mistake
My fan is making noise.
Took me 10 minutes to find the problem.
Would be a 20 minute job for me since i know how to do it. and there is no need to send me a replacement psu.
companies need to stop assuming that users cant fix basic stuff like this

@fuzzysig I totally agree...I told the agent last time on the phone that I had a recording of the rattle and offered to email it to them...he was too busy going through their checklist of nonsense....wouldn't listen. Very frustrating to deal with them.

@DELL-Chris M I offered to send a video the first time I called...it went in one ear and out the other. I was on the phone the first time for over an hour. The noise came back a few days later and called again. I ended the call when the agent insisted on wiping out my OS and reinstalling it...no way. It's not even two years old...

Dell chris.
Just wanted to point out that while you assume that nobody except dell is capable of replacing a psu fan(which is very poor assumption, but i understand why)
Your own agent (a supposedly trained tech) offered to reinstall windows to solve a noisy psu problem.
this is why we are having to fix your manufacturing defects ourselves.
Because while on paper dell offers great warranty, in real life every single company created bureauocratic drag in their system to avoid actually replacing warranty parts because eventually people just give up.
Dell loses customers for few years then releases a purposely undervalued product to win them back and everyone be like yeeeey good deal. And the cycle continues

@DELL-Chris M So you're suggesting that I call support for a 3rd time? I have already spent almost 2 hours on the phone with "support" and have gotten nowhere...it's extremely frustrating.

@catev Correct. The GHN agents must be the ones to hear the rattle in the video. Then verify your ownership and warranty, then setup either the "parts only service" or "onsite service" to replace the PSU.

* The Dell Legal team and the Dell XPS platform team dictate to us what the Dell policy is going to be. The policy to not disassemble a PSU as been in place since I started at Dell in 1997.
Your own agent (a supposedly trained tech) offered to reinstall windows to solve a noisy psu problem.
* Agreed, that was a miss in troubleshooting by the agent.

I understand the reasoning behind this.
Since we have people eating tidepods and have to have labels on car batteries to not drink the contents of the car battery...
Im just saying that yall cant just leave people hanging without a viable solution.
I bought this desktop used.
Its just barely year old.
Seller didnt tell me about that issue.
Now i have to deal with it.
Even if i bought this brand new i would still be in same position.
there should be extended warranty on known defective components.
We chose your product. dell could say thank you by offering to fix a known defect and not just kick rocks around until people give up and move on or buy a newer model.
This is why prebuilt systems have such a bad rep.
We know you save money on components to increase profit. At least stand behind the product and minimize the headache for customers who still chose your brand.
This is my 3rd dell desktop btw
Ive had multiple laptops also and still have the xps laptop as well.
So obviously i chose dell and not another brand. But these issues make me want to not use brand names anymore. i dont get back the time i spend trying to fix it

@DELL-Chris M OK I will try AGAIN...the 1st 2 agents I spoke to did not want the video. Hopefully next time I get someone who will listen...it's very frustrating to have to call multiple times to get help...

@DELL-Chris M can you recommend a fan that i can order that does not have that rattle issue?
Im well capable of replacing it. i have been repairing pcs since 98
Im assuming that other brands of psu use different brand fans that do not have this issue?
A dm would be cool if you dont want to make a public post

* Nope. I can only speak to the original OEM hardware. Other users must list the 3rd party fans they have tested.
