XPS 8950, ODD, brackets
I would like to install a stock ODD (optical disk drive) in my XPS 8950. It was shipped with the drive but the first owner removed the drive prior to sale. My front bezel has the slot so I'd like to make use of the opportunity!
I'm trying to determine the correct drive, bracket and DVD/CD bezel. It seems that 09M9FK might be the correct Dell part number but I can't confirm. I also can't find the mounting/bezel kit. My front bezel is gray.
There are hundreds of 09M9FK on eBay but none say they fit the XPS 8950, though I suspect they might. Can anyone provide some help on determining the correct device and where to find a mounting kit? Thanks!

Yes you can buy all of them from Dell. I have provided the DP/N of the drive (bare) and latch. I am not able to find the odd bezel DP/N at this time. Some third party vendor may sell the odd with a generic black bezel included. It may not be the exact same black color to match the 8950 night sky bezel color, but the difference might be subtle to notice. For a genuine 8950 black bezel, chat w Dell parts support online.

Dell Chris M is able to find it for me.
DRNVY (black odd bezel for 8950)
it is a new part that my search engine cannot even find.
note from 8910/20/30 to 8940, 8950 Dell has continuously redesigned the XPS front bezel odd slot which entails a different odd bezel.
8930 odd slot has a recess shelf different from 8940; 8940 odd slot has a rounded end, in contrast 8950 has a rectangular slot.

Go to the Parts-People page here and click on Does it fit your Dell. When you type in your service tag number it will confirm compatibility.

Re: first owner removed the drive prior to sale
you can use the service tag on Dell product support site and click view Product Specs on the right side of webpage (under quick links) which will show you the DP/N of the original odd Dell shipped in your unit (and subsequently removed by original owner).
note that 9M9FK is indeed one of the Dell oem odd validated for 8950. This is probably a bare optical drive without bezel. You may need to purchase a night sky (gray) odd bezel for the bare drive.
furthermore you may need to purchase a odd bracket or latch DP/N FK29V if that was removed by original owner. Lastly, this is the oem sata data cable for the odd
35KW8 HLDS 8X SATA DVD+/-RW
9M9FK HLDS 8X SATA DVD+/-RW
PNDVV PLDS 8X SATA DVD+/-RW
YYCRW PLDS 8X SATA DVD+/-RW

I tried this for my XPS 8930 and it said it can only show Dell laptops.

When I click on your link and put in the service code for my 8950, it says it is not compatible. I suspect, in part, because this drive comes with a silver bezel. I went to "8950 parts" on that site and it was pretty useless.

Thanks. I think there are several places to buy new or used drives that claim to be meet either of those p/n's. Any thoughts on finding a bezel and bracket specific to the 8950? From what I read, the bracket is an "L" shape that clips onto the drive before it slides into the front slot.

Thanks!! It seems that there is quite a selection of drives out there on Ebay and Amazon. Some come with what seems to be a generic bezel. You mentioned purchasing a "night sky" bezel that would be sure to match the 8950 case. I'm not sure I've seen where to buy that but somewhere I saw a "kit" with a bezel. Is that Dell?
Thanks for the tip on the bracket. I thought for the 8950, there was also a small bracket that clips onto the back of the drive. Sorry to be a pest but this seems like something where you could just buy all of the compatible needed parts from Dell but it's not been that easy.

Just a follow up - I have a drive and bracket. Installed the bracket you suggested on the drive and it fit perfectly. Installed in machine, hooked up power and data cables and device is recognized and works fine.
Remaining problem - I bought a generic bezel. I think it is too "thin" because the front of the drive sets back "into the machine" about 1/2". If I release the latch and push the drive flush to the front, the bezel is flush in the middle and sticks out at the ends. Bottom line - I need a bezel specific to the 8950.
I did a chat with Dell Sales as you suggested. They couldn't bring up my service code for whatever reason. I explained that it was a part for any 8950 with an ODD. He typed in a part number and disconnected. The part number had nothing to do with an ODD or an 8950. Any suggestions to find the correct part other than continuing to chat with Dell to try and find someone helpful?

this is what the genuine 8950 odd bezel should look like. I still do not know its DP/N yet but if I find out I will let you know.

That makes sense. The one I bought is about 2-3mm "thick" so it's inset from the face of the front bezel. It's seems to be such a simple thing but, without the actual part number, I'm getting nowhere finding the right thing. I've looked through shipping specs for 8950's with DVD/CD's. Their part numbers are clear as you reported previously but I can't determine the bezel. Does anyone on this forum know where there's one available?
Thanks!!!

I am still looking for a bezel for a stock ODD in an XPS 8950. Through several helpful folks in this forum, it seems that the 8950 bezel is not the same as any other 89xx model.
REDXPS630 reported that is was likely P/N DRNVY, but I've found no one in Dell parts who has heard of the number (or the part either). There are no listings on Ebay or various other sites that I can find.
Does anyone have access to this part? Or have any ideas where I can look? I have a feeling that this comes as some part of a trim package for the 8950 but I can't identify anything in the parts lists for 8950's with ODD's.
Thanks for looking!

I think an external dvd drive is a better option. We will not be using DVDs for much longer. Inexpensive, small sized and easy to use.
