XPS 8940, removed AMD Radeon RX 5700, no more freeze ups

XPS 8940

XPS 8940

Tested the AMD Radeon RX 5700 8GB GDDR6 by installing it in a different computer to see if the freeze up issue could be replicated. Yes the same freeze up occurred so the GPU was faulty. My XPS 8940 runs perfectly now minus the  AMD Radeon RX 5700 8GB GDDR6. Dell has so far refused to acknowledge the internal flaw.

Doesn't necessarily mean the GPU hardware is at fault.

Could still be a Windows (software) conflict with the GPU and/or with the AMD driver, since both PCs are running Windows, and both presumably running the same AMD driver.

A little 'light' on the information.

  • No mention of when of when it started?
  • No h/w specifications, BIOS Version, RAM amount, or when the 'freeze' happens?
  • No mention of what other things. if any, on the 8940 you tried?
  • You said "Tested the AMD Radeon RX 5700 8GB GDDR6 by installing it in a different computer to see if the freeze up issue could be replicated. Yes the same freeze up occurred so the GPU was faulty." but not how you determined "the same freeze up occurred"?
  • What exactly did Dell say and how did you report it?

I note these as posted many time in this forum some BIOS version did/do cause freezes in AMD (and Nvidia) 8940's. Also, Windows 11 had an update that caused it as well in some circumstances and driver/utility combinations.

So, we both PC's running W11?

Were it the same steps when performed the freeze happened, or the same general usage and it did?

Did you search here for similar problems? I suspect not as you've only posted twice here with the same message (not that is wrong mind you, just curious if you did look at others and the fixes/suggestion didn't work for you?).

I'll assume you have gone back to the built-in Intel HD750, and it is well known that that does indeed work fine.

So, again, assuming you've looked at possible 8940/AMD card and BIOS or MS caused problems and the known fixes for them, you tool the video card to a W10 PC (or not another W11 at the same windows version) and then the problem still existed, was your 8940 covered by a support contract? Out of Support coverage, well, I would not expect much from Dell, other than an offer to buy support and/or sell you a replacement card?

An 'Internal Flaw'??? Are you suggesting the 8940 has one? Or the card itself? In either case, if there were a 'design issue/Internal Flaw', would not there be a lot of reports of this before (I assume again the video card was sold to you by Dell with the OEM AMD card installed)? I guess that also begs the question I asked above, basically did the card ever work before?

Just curious and asking question so it can be understood better?

Now if you just got the XPS8940 or within the last year (it is a few XPS releases old, circa 2020 release date) from Dell, that is a different story about Dell not working with you UNDER WARRANTY to resolve the issue.

Dell replaced my motherboard, it just happened the Tempature 3 and 7 sensors died, so the system thought that the system it was running the mainboard at 176.0c which just kept the system fans at 100%, anyways Long story short, the replacement board, Which was brand new not a refurb, has not locked up.

Then again I don't know if it is even the same type of motherboard that originally came with the 8940 or could be a new revision, couldn't find any actual markings.  The layout is the same however that means nothing.

@JamieLinux

Motherboards Dell put on the XPS8940's:

Motherboards =
KV3RP Foxconn 02012PQ00-600-G, Released July 9, 2020
2W4W1 Foxconn 02012TA00-600-G, Released December 1, 2020, Brazil only
F1H92 Foxconn 02012YJ00-600-G, Released March 15, 2021, Brazil only
427JK Foxconn 02012VY00-600-G, Released March 15, 2021
K3CM7 Foxconn ??, Released July 14, 2021

Depending when you purchased the 8940 would probably determine the montherboard initially installed. I think I had the 427JK when BIOS V 2.4.0 started the problem. Dell had just released that motherboard as it was new then, and put the older one in my XPS, KV3RP. Still failed... By then they also had the K3CM7, but my XPS would NOT boot with it, so I was put back to 427JK.

If you run MSINFO32 you will see the current motherboard you have, probably one of the last two.

If it was brand new (surprised they had a stock of new ones?) you probably got the last one on the list.

By the way, what is the BIOS Version? If V2.3.0, you will not have a problem, that one was fine, any after that had the problem.

I have 0k3cm7 a00 and it has the latest firmware on it, but it doesn't lock up or it has not as of yet.

I purchased 4 of these PC's with the AMD Radeon RX 5700. The freezing started on all 4 after upgrading to Windows 11 and a new driver was issued. I disabled the GPU and just ran the onboard graphics.
