XPS 8940, ram upgrade 4x8GB?

Hi,

I my pc has 2 x 8 GB RAM installed with the other two slots empty. I was thinking about adding 2 more identical make 8GB modules in the other two slots. Will that work? I have seen posts that imply that 4x8GB config is not good.

Yes, your proposed total of 32 GB RAM (four x 8 GB) should work, though it is not a configuration that Dell tested and approved. Buy from a vendor like Crucial that allows returns/refunds if it doesn't work.

Here is Crucial RAM guaranteed compatible with your system. You can also buy RAM from Dell that is guaranteed compatible with your 8940.

Be aware that sometimes mismatched RAM brands/models may not play well together, which is why it's often recommended to use matched pairs of identical RAM modules. If the specs match, though, it may well work, and the Crucial RAM is guaranteed so you can return it if necessary.

Whenever touching components or working inside a computer, wear a grounded wrist strap, also called anti-static wrist strap, ESD wrist strap, or ground bracelet. It's a cheap and sensible precaution. Rest the laptop on an anti-static mat or at least a reasonable alternative such as corrugated cardboard. (Repeatedly touching a metal case part is not sufficient mitigation with modern components.)

I'm not saying it will not work, but 4 x 8GB RAM modules is not a Dell supported configuration  (below). Also, getting '2 more identical' means getting the RAM from Dell.

If you do 4x8 =32 make sure to get single-rank DIMMs for 4 x configuration.  Slight less burden on the memory controller also 4 x sticks will operate like 2x dual rank DIMMs. if you were doing 2x16=32 I would go dual rank.  Either way, 4x8  should be a valid config even if Dell didn't "Certify* it.

I got the Crucial units you highlighted. My pc has Micron RAM already fitted so this aligns with the new units. I put them in opposing coloured slots (which has been suggested elsewhere) and all works well at the memory runnning at the 2933Hz. Happy days!
