You can add them. It is NOT a Dell supported configuration though (https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/xps-desktops/faq-xps-8940/647f8b92f4ccf8a8debaa59c), which really means Dell most likely did not TEST it.

If it does present problems, you'd probably should remove the 2 8GB sticks and test to make sure the new sticks are good.

Make sure the new RAM is fully compatible. Dell PCs can be very fussy about RAM, even if it seems to have the right specs.  You don't have to buy RAM from Dell, and many people here buy RAM from crucial.com. Their site will recommend specific RAM for the XPS 8940, and they'll take it back for a full refund, if their recommended RAM doesn't work.

Even if the 80 GB config works, be sure to check the speed the RAM is running.  You can use CPU-z (free) to check.

If the RAM is running slower than expected, try "mis-pairing" them.  In other words, instead of having a pair of matched modules in slots with the same color retention clips, install a matched pair in slots with different color clips, and then install the other matched pair in the two empty slots.  Then check RAM speed again with CPU-z.
