XPS 8940, new PSU, runs then no image?

XPS 8940

XPS 8940

I suspected that the original 500 watt PSU died because there was zero power anywhere. I installed a new one, PC boots up, loads desktop, everything works completely normally for 2 to 5 minutes. Then the screens go off, I can hear the fans speed up, The GeForce RTX remains illuminated inside, the power button is still solid white, green LED on power supply goes off, but otherwise the machine appears to be still on. I can't turn it off by using the power button, so I unplug the power for a few minutes. Turn it back on, it works perfectly for a few minutes, but repeats the same cycle. Any ideas?

Any signs the CPU is overheating in the few min it works before a crash?

A bum replacement PSU? Or does this mean the original PSU wasn't the cause of the problem in first place?

Dead/dying motherboard battery?

After you installed new PSU, did you reconnect monitor to the RTX card, not to an onboard Intel Graphics port?

How is NVidia Control Panel's Manage 3D settings>Power Management set? "Prefer max performance" seems to be the best setting.

Have you looked in Windows Event Viewer to see if any errors get logged when it crashes?  Ignore Kernel 41 errors which are just generic errors meaning Windows wasn't shut down properly (you pulled the plug. Kernel 41 errors don't tell you what caused the crash.

@RoHe No indication that CPU is overheating. I put the old PSU back in, and can confirm definitely dead with zero power to anything. The new PSU provides power, the green LED light on it is on while the PC is working normally, but then the green LED on the PSU goes out, the monitors go into standby, the fans stop, but the LED lettering on the video card remains on, and the white power button light stays on. Are there any clues here? I will try some things you suggested.

@Jondroids

If you physically take out the Nvidia card and use the internal video port, does this still happen?

If you're using a power strip and/or a surge protector, remove them and connect PC directly to a working outlet before testing further...

Can you test this monitor and its cable on a different PC or a different monitor and its cable that's connected to the NVidia card on the XPS 8940?

BTW: Have you read this thread with similar issues on XPS 8940?  It would seem you may have the same problem as all those users.

One user was able to extend the warranty until the end of PC's 4th year, for a price, and Dell replaced the motherboard.  Another user just paid Dell to replace the motherboard.  That fixes the problem...

@RoHe Thanks this looks like the avenue I will be taking. I have lodged an extended warranty request with DEll to investigate MOBD replacement. If it is the MOBD though, I don't understand how it works perfectly only for about 5 minutes. I would expect it to not work at all.

Could just be a bad component or a bad solder joint on the motherboard that fails as it heats up...

Hope they agree to swap the motherboard. Post back and let us know the outcome...

@RoHe Dell want to charge me $245 to extend warranty for 12 months. I asked them if this is a known issue with this model, with so many people having the same problem, why should I have to pay anything? The MOBD should be replaced free of charge. I haven't received a reply yet lol.

Don't count on them replacing the motherboard.  Your warranty has expired...

I don't know that "so many people" are having the same problem.  Dell used a bunch of different motherboards in XPS 8940, and who knows if the problem is with one particular board, or with more than one..?  Which motherboard do you have?

XPS 8940 Motherboards:

KV3RP Foxconn 02012PQ00-600-G, Released July 9, 2020
2W4W1 Foxconn 02012TA00-600-G, Released December 1, 2020, Brazil only
F1H92 Foxconn 02012YJ00-600-G, Released March 15, 2021, Brazil only
427JK Foxconn 02012VY00-600-G, Released March 15, 2021
K3CM7 Foxconn ??, Released July 14, 2021

And if they refuse to replace it for free, what are you going to do? Can you buy/replace the board for less than a $245 warranty extension?  At least a warranty extension will cover all hardware repairs for another year, but you probably won't get much/any warranty if you buy the motherboard on your own.  And even if you get a warranty on the board, it won't cover any other hardware failures.
