XPS 8940, BIOS 2.16.0 not installing

XPS 8940

XPS 8940

I was notified by Support Assist there is an update for my XPS 8940 BIOS to version 2.16.0. Using Support Assist I downloaded and installed the update three times and none of them the BIOS was updated. The PC asks for a restart, but no update is installed. I went and downloaded the XPS_8940_2.16.0.exe file manually and ran it. It asked for a restart, and the same happened, the BIOS was not updated. If I go to the support web site it still says I need the update and if I run sysinfo it say I have BIOS version Dell Inc. 2.15.1, with date 9/27/2023.

Any help?

when you run into a problematic bios flash and your pc is currently working fine with 2.15 bios, take a breath and take it as a message that the bios update block could actually be a blessing.  there is no need to update if you have no issue with current bios.  SA advice or Dell support site are just AI and not an actual user of your pc.  their advice could be sometimes a risk.  if you keep trying hard to fight the bios update block there is increased risk of failed flash and bricking the board.

@Sergio Torres C.  - If you really want/need to install that BIOS update, it's always safer to do that entirely outside Windows.

Download the BIOS .exe file onto an empty (non-bootable) USB stick (2 - 8 GB, formatted FAT32).  Power PC off fully (not a Restart from inside Windows). With USB plugged into PC, power on. Tap F12 when you see the Dell splash screen. When F12 menu opens, select the option to Flash Update.

When that opens, use tab key to select the .exe on the USB, confirm current and new BIOS info in top left and right boxes. Tab to Start button and launch the update. PC will re-boot itself automatically several times, and may look like it shut off and isn't doing anything. Just leave it alone, until you're safely back at the desktop.

@Sergio Torres C.  - You may still want to check in BIOS setup to see if UEFI Capsule Updates is enabled or disabled. If it's enabled, Windows Update can install the latest BIOS update without warning or permission. So you may want to disable that setting. Be sure to save the change when exiting BIOS setup.

Keep in mind, every new BIOS update, regardless of how it got installed, will re-enable the UEFI Capsule Updates setting...
