(Marking as solution for visibility)

Hi all,

We would like to share the most recent workaround provided by the team:

  1. Ensure that the drivers & BIOS available from Dell Support are installed on the system.
  2. If Nvidia driver is updated kindly install the driver available on Dell Support site as well.

If the issue persists, please contact Dell Support by using the "Get Help Now" button located at the bottom left of your screen.

After updating the bios 2.13 to 2.14 the pc freezes.  I've tried to downgrade back 2.13 and it shows me the downgrade completed successfully but when the desktop appears there is a message in above the date/time saying I need to reboot to finish the 2.14 update?

@sneekez

I assume you ignored that and all worked fine?

There could be a pointer to the V2.14 BIOS file somewhere? Might need to find that pointer or rename the file to rename them to get rid of those?

Is UEFI Capsule Updates is enabled in BIOS setup? Try disabling that option and see if the message about 2.14 goes away...

@sneekez

I have the same PC freezing issue with my Dell XPS 8940 after updating to this 2.14 bios, always when the monitor has been in sleep for over around 20 or more minutes. I might next try setting the monitor and system to sleep at the same time for now to see how that goes. The Event Viewer application doesn't list anything helpful other than a rough idea when the system froze.

I have also earlier reverted back to the 2.13.1 bios, but couldn't resolve the freezing issue. (I'm still on the reverted bios firmware version for now) The only thing that will not revert in the Dell bios package update is the Intel ME firmware. Apparently the Intel Management Engine can not be downgraded on these computes.

I've also tried resetting the power management plan back to Dell's default plan (Monitor 10min, Computer 30min), and after also setting the hard disk power management to not turn off, but no luck half of the time. My system has the Nvidia 3060Ti in it and I've always been using that for the monitors. I'm hoping that Dell will be able to soon fix this stability issue that arrived within this 2.14 Bios update.

I updated my dell 8940 to bios 2.14 from 2.13.1 as recommended by dell update, and my system became unstable and kept freezing and made me do a hard reset on power button.   I noticed that windows update 11 under other updates recommended I use 2.13.1, so i did a downgrade back 2.13.1 and now my system is more stable.  I find it wierd that microsoft detected problems and not Dell.   For now I do not feel comfortable using 2.14 on my system.   Maybe a 2.14.1 will come out that fixes this problem for me.

@sneekez Thank you to all that replied!  Ended up going the f12 route, os recovery, all went ok and upgraded to Win 11 and so far all is good...bios 2.10.  Thx again!

@sneekez

I've updated back on the 2.14 bios update package and found that it will freeze the system almost every time at around 20 minutes after the monitor is put to sleep. (Same freeze time even with 2.13.1 bios package downgrade, but the freeze only first appeared in 2.14.) So for now I have the Win10 power management plan set to 30 minutes for both monitor and PC sleep. This way there's no time for whatever the problem trigger is to lock up the computer. I normally have PC sleep set to never, so it's something going on only after the monitor display is sleeping for a while.

Sounds like you are on to something, 2.14 must of buggered with the power management, possibly broke it.  Currently, I have my system set to high performance and never turn off display.   I also have the nvidia control panel-manage 3d settings-program settings-power management mode (set to prefer maximum performance.    I never leave my computer running when not in use, so I dont mind leaving it on these energy high usage settings.   But, when i went to 2.14 it appeared to ignore these settings if you are correct.  Drat, I hate things that break like that,   Spend hours troubleshooting..............

I had logged into the Dell Community Forums with the purpose creating a post asking about this update when I found this thread. I guess I'll be waiting a while before I update BIOS on my XPS8940 to see if (or when) Dell fixes the bugs that the latest version appears to have.

Ron, I did too, but to be honest, with never fixing or fully acknowledging the first V2.4.0 BIOS problem, I don't hold much hope we will get an answer or even a response. It will be 'try the next version and hope' sort of deal.

@jello909 replied in other subject, but don't use MS Update to install BIOS updates. This should be a reason why.

If you do install V2.13.1, MS will only reinstall V2.14 on you if you don't turn off Capsule Update in BIOS.

Always handle the BIOS install manually to be safe. I have had MS Update  install one on me, an I never knew it happened. No warning, no booting showing the BIOS was being updated, nothing...

@jello909  - Are you sure Windows Update is recommending a BIOS downgrade? Or, is WU just behind in offering new BIOS updates?

FWIW, WU is still offering an old BIOS version (Jan-2023) for my XPS 8930 even though Dell posted a newer update (July-2023), which I installed.  So the BIOS version being offered by WU doesn't mean they're recommending a downgrade, at least not for me. It means they're just way behind...
