XPS 8930, won't turn on

My XPS 8930 won't power on and the light on the back in off. I tried unplugging and resetting by holding the power button for a minute to no avail.

@ItzicA  - If you're using a power strip or surge protector, remove them and connect PC directly to a working wall outlet. Make sure the power cord is fully seated in the socket on rear of PC and try another power cord if you have one.

Did you run the BIST test that's described here for a system with a BIST button next to that LED on rear of PC?

This will not answer your question but I had the same problem about 2 months ago. I started by removing all USB and external connected products. Just keyboard and mouse attached. I tried new power supply, no change. I removed the motherboard, reseated the ram, tried a new video card. Nothing. I even jumped the ATX pins to force the supply to turn on - nope! I took my hard drive out, connected  in another computer, could not read it! That was strange to me. I replaced the RTC battery, did everything I could think of. Finally gave up, just bought the 8940. My 8930 ran perfect, no signs of any issues. It just stopped working and something happened to the hard drive. The main issue, I could not even get it powered on. It was a mystery to me.

good luck on yours.

Yeah, computers fail for various reasons (actually, they don't even need a reason).

But biggest reason is power-surges (or as AC power-grid re-powers after black-out). If computer's power-supply takes a hit and blows-up ... it can often take-out the motherboard, PCIe-cards, and drives.

Best insurance against power surges is a high-quality UPS-battery (like an APC with AVR).

Best insurance against computer failure is creating a backup (before you need it).

This really scares me because I have an XPS 8930. I had a HP Pavilion HPE270f it ran for years it was first gen i7 and was top of the line in 2010. It ran until last year. Well it actually still ran but was not reading all the memory I had 12 GB and it only read 8 GB and I had 12 GB for years I tested the ram but found out ram slots were bad. Anyway my point is I hope mine don't all of a sudden die.

I have a backup now another HP HP Elite 8300 a business model. But my XPS 8930 is my main system and the last one I buy from Dell.

I purchased in 2019 and have almost $2000.00 in this system. I expect it to last about 10 years. I guess Dell's don't last that long anymore.

@Colorado_scott

Did it have a HDD and M.2 SSD or just a HDD? My bet is the Hard drive may have shorted out something for some reason. Did you try to turn it on without the Hard Drive? Sorry if you said I may have missed it.

Yes, I just had one hard drive in the system; 1TB (not SSD). Yes, I tried to turn on without the hard drive connected - did not work. I’m 69, I’ve built many systems in my past and purchased many also - this is the first one I’ve had that ever did this. Normally I’ll start getting disk read errors or similar, then I start backing up critical files. This system worked perfect until it didn’t. My wife has a computer, and lots of electronics plugged in all over the house, this computer is the only thing that stopped working so I’m not sure it was a power surge.

1. In my experience, that is to late to be backing-up.

2. Not only are computers the most complex/sensitive ... surges often affect just one machine per incident as that is where the electricity finally "finds ground". The machine becomes a "giant fuse" if you will.

=======================

I have many old Dells that still work fine in my garage (desktops and laptops) ... some are my family's old ones and some from clients.

Still in use here Aurora-R6, Aurora-R1 (circa 2010), XPS-8300 (circa 2011), Dell Inspiron One 2330 (circa 2012), Latitude e6330 (circa 2013) ... but that is not a complete list. I have many older ones that still work and of course many newer Dell laptops.

Also still working and in use older HPs (mostly business-class models) and Apple Macs. I would not hesitate to buy more of them or Dells.

The old (repaired) Lenovo X1-Carbon touch laptop still works (and still used often) but out of the 4 brands, the only one I would NOT try again.

Luckily I have extended warranty from the place I bought the PC. Once I backup my data (hopefully hard drive not damaged) I will ship it to the repair shop.

@ItzicA  - Glad you have a warranty.

Post back and let us know what they find. The info could help other users who might encounter the same problem...

Unfortunately I lost my data. It was on the SSD and something caused the data to be erased. I took the PC to a tech shop to get the data backed up before I ship it to the PC clinic for the warranty. I didn't realize my files were saved to that drive and not the regular SATA drive (which is much larger in size and my photos were saved there and were intact).
