XPS 8930, Windows 11 upgrade failing

XPS 8930

XPS 8930

Hi.  I have a four year old XPS 8930 (i5-9400 16GB) running Windows 10. I would like to upgrade to Windows 11 but the upgrade keeps failing. I've searched for solutions and the problem appears to be driver incompatability.  The computer is now out of warranty. Both Windows Update and Dell SupportAssist show that all drivers are fully up to date.

It comes up with a blue screen about half way through the install process: Invalid Data Access Trap. The code is 0xc1900101 and subcode 0x30018. It recovers and returns to Windows 10 so computer remains usable.

I don't have any peripherals connected except screen, keyboard and mouse. I have attempted to install Windows 11 from a clean boot and that made no difference. I have attempted the upgrade both from within Windows Update and from a clean download of Windows 11.

The computer hasn't been modified since it was purchased. Microsoft advise to contact your hardware vendor to obtain updated device drivers. Which updated drivers might I need?

Many thanks for any advice and assistance.

if you are ok with wiping the ssd losing everything on it, I suggest you back up the data you need on the conventional hdd, then uninstall the hdd, leaving only ssd installed.  replace cmos battery w a new one, clear 8930 cmos by using CMOS CLR jumper.  enter bios to switch SATA operation to AHCI,  save change in bios, exit,  use a bootable USB that has Win 11 install media to boot pc, proceed to do a clean Win 11 24H2 (latest 10/2024) version on the ssd and hope it is error free.

if after this you still run into error doing clean install on the ssd, then try use a test hdd to replace the ssd.  can be any working sata hdd no smaller than 80 GB.  if the test hdd has no error it would imply the ssd is no good

Re: I have attempted to install Windows 11 from a clean boot

try use a test hdd to do a clean install

first uninstall the current boot drive ssd or hdd

find a spare hdd and install it

download Win 11 installation media and make a bootable usb

boot from usb

enter custom mode

delete all old partition on test hdd

proceed to install

Many thanks @redxps630 .  That makes sense.  I will have a go at the weekend.

@redxps630

Thanks again for your help.  I have now been able to look inside the computer.

The boot drive is a Micron 2200s SSD NVMe.  There is also a conventional Seagate Barracuda drive.  Unfortunately I do not have a spare NVMe SSD to test whether replacing the Micron will fix my problems.

Also there is another issue:

Before opening the computer I got a blue screen “WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR”.

After rebooting it displayed the message “Checking media presence …” and eventually opened the BIOS setup screen.  It doesn’t now seem able to get beyond that.

Many thanks for any further advice or suggestions.

Many thanks again for your help @redxps630.  This seems to have fixed it.  The computer is working again now and all seems well after putting a new battery in the CMOS and a clean install of Windows 11.  It lost the NVIDIA graphics card in the process but I have now found and reinstalled the correct drivers.  No errors reported on the SSD so hopefully that has some more life left in it and I won't need a new one.  Much appreciated .
