XPS 8930, SSD compatibility

XPS 8930

XPS 8930

I have a Dell XPS 8930 with an Intel i7 9700 8 cores with "256GB" SSD drive. I would like to upgrade this to a WD_Black SN850x M.2 2TB. Can anyone tell me if this drive would be compatible with my system? I would like to change the intel SSD for the WD_Black. I just got into programming classes, so I still do not recognize M.2 connectors. Would I need to buy an adaptor or something??

Also, upgrade my 2TB HHD for the Seagate IronWolf 4TB NAS Internal Hard Drive CMR 3.5 Inch SATA 6Gb/s 5400 RPM 64MB Cache for RAID Network Attached Storage Rescue Services (ST4000VNZ06/006) Can anyone tell me if this one would be compatible with my system too?

Thanks!.

Any M.2 NVME 2280 SSD will be compatible with your XPS 8930. No adapters needed since XPS 8930 motherboard has an M.2 connector where your current SSD is installed.  See #8 in motherboard pic here.  All you have to do is remove the screw holding the existing SSD to remove it, then plug in the new one use that same screen to hold it in place. (Obviously, the PC has to be unplugged from the outlet first.)

XPS 8930 came with BIOS set to RAID, so it would be a good idea to change it to AHCI before swapping SSDs because some SSDs don't work well with RAID.  But, you have to configure BIOS and Windows to use AHCI properly or you'll make PC unbootable:

  1. At desktop, open CMD prompt window, run as administrator
  2. Copy-paste this command, which will start Windows in Safe Mode the next time you boot: bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal and press Enter
  3. Restart the computer and tap F2 when you see the Dell screen to enter BIOS setup
  4. Change SATA Operation from RAID to AHCI
  5. Save the change and exit Setup. Windows will automatically boot in Safe Mode
  6. Open CMD again, as in step #1
  7. Copy-paste this command, which will start Windows in Normal Mode the next time you boot: bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot and press Enter
  8. Reboot and Windows will automatically start with AHCI drivers enabled
  9. Assuming everything is working properly, you're ready to either image existing SSD onto new one or swap in new one and do a clean installation of Windows and all your apps...

The Seagate IronWolf 4TB NAS should be compatible with SATA3 on the motherboard, but I don't know if the "RAID" part requires BIOS to be set to RAID, meaning you wouldn't want to change BIOS and Windows to ACHI, as I said above. So that may take some extra homework for you to figure out.

@ozzzies11  - Crucial does warn that their NVME SSDs don't work well with BIOS set to RAID.

You should have reconfigured BIOS and Windows to use AHCI before upgrading. So do it now, exactly as posted above.

Keep in mind that XPS 8930 only supports PCI-e 3.0 so your new PCI-e 4.0 SSD isn't going to run as fast as its specs say it can...
