XPS 8930, Nvidia, Microsoft Windows 10 issues

Problems yet again with this computer! Any ideas what is going on? I took it to Staples they ran a lengthy scan, they said no malicious things but processes were running crazy.

I turn on the computer Monday morning, VERY slow to load =

Sreen Saver, Docs, Pictures, M/S Office 2019 Home & Bus, which I purchased in 2020 all GONE!

I use Google Chrome and want nothing to do with Edge. It would not allow me to sign on Google Chrome, said I had to wait 48 hours to reset it. Ran Troubleshooter, it said "CHROME INCOMPATIBLE". After the 48 hours they emailed and said ok. I can get on G. Chrome now, however, it does not give me the ability to make it default browser. Also, lower right corner has a pop up box which reads:  Nvidia Control Panel is not found, click here to install", nothing happens.

A lot of these same symptoms happened last Jan along with the Issue with Upload Speeds which I was able to correct with the help of this forum, it was related to Killer which I try to keep off the system.

I finally called Dell and requested Tech Support, paid them. He worked on it for a little over an hour on Friday said he would call me back in hour +15 mins. Never heard back, gave me no indication what was wrong. He removed Dell Support Assist which was also popping up.

I sell on 3 marketplaces and rely on this computer for my business, bookkeeping on Excel, Word and just loaded and almost completed my Turbo Taxes.

I do not want One Drive. I have entirely too many docs and photos for it to be synced with my laptop that I had to purchase last year when Dell had me send it to Texas for repair. Long story short on that, they didn't fix it and refunded me fully.

I really have to vent with the lack of reliable tech support and Microsoft hijacking everything!

In using my HP Laptop for necessities this week, I realize that Windows 11 is a horrible O/S. I couldn't scan multiple pages with my printer/scanner which I've been doing for years. Trying to organize files, a feat for someone with alot of patience as it is always shoving things on One Drive.  I think I've uninstalled it on my laptop bc this is only for emergencies. not enough storage space to run my business. Any help or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

What does "processes were running crazy" mean?   Do you know which processes?

Has the motherboard battery been replaced recently?

Have you checked in services.msc recently to see if those Killer services got enabled by another update via Windows Update?.

Might help if you give us some specs:
CPU?

RAM?

Video card?

Boot drive, SSD or HDD, and size?
What other drives installed, and sizes?

Is monitor connected to the NVidia card, not to one of the onboard Intel Graphics ports?

Might be a drive failure. On which drive were the missing apps/files stored?

Have you tried installing the NVidia Control Panel?

For starters, reboot and tap F12 when you see the Dell splash screen. When the menu opens, select option to run diagnostics and run all of them. Copy error messages (if any).  This can take a long time, so be patient.

If no hardware problems reported, try this:

  1. At desktop, open a CMD prompt window, Run as administrator
  2. At the prompt, type in: chkdsk c: /r and press Enter. Accept offer to run chkdsk at next boot and reboot. chkdsk will run before Windows loads so be patient. When PC is back at desktop, open the chkdsk log to see if there are any "unfixed" errors.
  3. Assuming no unfixed chkdsk errors, open CMD again, as in #1.
  4. At the prompt, type in: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and press Enter. Be sure to include a space in front of each / and note any error messages when that's done.
  5. Assuming no "unfixed" errors in #4, at the CMD prompt, type in: sfc /scannow and press Enter. Be sure to include a space in front of the / and note any errors when that's done.

Assuming no "unfixed" errors in any of above, reboot PC and see if things improve...

@RoHe Thank you so much for your help... while all your suggestions were way above my pay grade.... thankfully Dell did return my call with a competent tech who was able to resolve my issues within a half hour..... however, last year when I had the issue with my upload speeds, someone posted a solution re:  Disabling the Killer Ethernet.     So what the Dell guy did reactivated Killer, and this morning I was able to follow those instructions and get rid of it and my upload speeds are not good..... My question for you is how come Dell Tech do not know about this?   They are clueless.

Thanks again!   Appreciate your help.

Do you know exactly what the tech did? That would be very useful info to post.

I'm a bit confused by your last post. You don't have to disable Killer Ethernet hardware, only the Killer services in services.msc.  I have Killer Ethernet on my XPS 8930 and it works perfectly as long as all Killer services are disabled in services.msc. (I don't use the WiFi on this PC.)

You said "...get rid of it and my upload speeds are not good.....".  Did you mean the upload speeds are good, now that you got rid of the Killer services? Or is there still a problem?

The techs don't know about the problem or the fix for Killer because they don't read this forum...!  ;o))
