XPS 8930, install drive, backup full C drive?
How to install upgraded C drive in XPS 8930? How to backup C drive & copy to replacement drive? Clone C or Backup & Restore? C almost full
I have an XPS 8930 that has been working fine since I purchased it in 2020.
I have noticed that since it did several updates of Windows 11 something changed with the C drive, but I don't know if it is coincidental.
In the past 2 weeks I have been getting notices that the C drive is almost full, and the amount of usage keeps fluctuating by about 15GB, even though I have deleted a lot of files.
Today Dell Support Assist just gave me an alert that the C drive is going to fail.
The C Drive is only 221GB.
I would like to replace the C drive with a larger SSD 1TB or 2TB drive.
I did read on this forum that the specifications for the XPS 8930 say that it is only made to handle up to 1TB, so I don't know if I should go as high as a 2TB. I would like this to be easy.
Any recommendations as to 1 TB or 2TB?
In googling how to fully backup the C drive I saw 2 options:
1) Clone the Drive - with some sort of a software
or
2) Windows Backup & Restore
I have a bunch of Apps on the XPS that I would really not like to have to reinstall every one of them if I don't have to.
What is the best way to proceed with Backing Up and putting everything on the new drive?
Which size Drive do you recommend?
Which Drive do you recommend?
Does Dell provide any support when I buy the drive from Dell?
thanks so much!

Hi
First check what can be added,
https://uk.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/dell/xps-8930#tabs-Storage-tab
from a reputable supplier, Crucial, Kingston and Mr Memory come to mind.
Then check and DOUBLE check what your device accepts.

It may be possible to fit/mount the new device alongside the existing and copy/clone that way.
Manufacturers usually provide a method/means of copying/cloning on their website.
ELSE
Macrium Reflect is a possibility.
If in doubt please ask.

Either 1 or 2 TB ssd are supported.
Dell 1 TB max is only Dell oem max.
I would clone 220 gb ssd to 1 TB.
another option is to add a 1TB hdd then move data from 220gb ssd to hdd then free up space on ssd.
