XPS 720 any one still running it?
I once had a dead 720 mobo which I removed. I recall installed an optiplex 755 oem board in 720 case. it fits b/c both are BTX. but it would not turn on any LED. later I got a used 720 board that has bent cpu socket pin but still post. All LEDs work now controlled by 720 BIOS. Apparently if it is not a 720 board, none of the LEDs would power on. this is in contrast to later 730 or 630 models.
I am wondering if there is known LED pinout of front up and lower that one can program in case the 720 board dies and I can use a generic BTX board to power on LED.

Dell Chris M mentioned: how to control RGB LEDs on XPS 720
https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/locked-topics-desktops-general/how-do-i-control-the-colored-leds-on-my-xps-720/647e850ef4ccf8a8de585146
There are two ways to do this, using nTune or the QuickSet software.
nTune
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/ntune-5053800/
* Download and install Nvidia ntune
* When finished installing, restart the PC
* Press F2 to enter the bios
* Scroll down to Performance- Overclocking
* Enable overclocking. This will set ntune so you can control the lights
* Exit Saving changes and reboot into Windows
* Open nTune
* Scroll down to Performance- LED Control- nTune
* Turn on Advanced View and accept the agreement under performance. This will then give you an option to be able to program your LEDs
=========
QuickSet Application for the XPS 720
* After installing QuickSet, reboot your computer and press F2 at the boot screen
* Make sure you go to the PERFORMANCE tab and turn ON the Advanced- Performance Application Support for the processor
* Now, after starting Windows, open Quickset. You can change your LED effects here
* To get Quickset to work with Windows Media Player 11, do the following:
- In Quickset under the LED EFFECTS tab, make sure the Windows Media Player add-in is checked
- Now open Windows Media Player
- Click on the small arrow under the menu NOW PLAYING
- Select VISUALIZATIONS
- Select DELL XPS Light FX
- Select the Light FX effect you wish.

I verify Quickset works quite nicely.
has some nice LED control features.

p.156.
front top n bottom led (4 each) uses a 5 pin connector user has mapped out 4/5 are red/green/blue GND and +5V. 1/5 not connected. This overall scheme is similar to 730 MCB front LED.

The interesting thing about the Precision 690, T7400/T7500 workstations is that the case internal design is almost the same as the XPS
the pinout of the GX series, XPS 700/10/20, Precision 490/690, XPS 4xx, and the Dimension 5xxx all appear to be the same.

The Dell XPS 710 was an incremental upgrade to the XPS 700, with the primary difference being the introduction of the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 quad-core processor in the 710, while the 700 used dual-core processors like the Pentium Extreme Edition
The Dell XPS 720 was a significant upgrade over the XPS 700, offering a more modern NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI chipset (vs. the 700's nForce 590)

XPS 720X is a combination of 720 and 730X case
user can swap the back panel of the two case, such as add the 730X back panel to the 720 case.
It is theoretically possible to modify 720 front top/bottom LED connectors to convert them to LEDs for 730 MCB.
720: 5 pin for top (4) and bottom (4) LED
730X: 6 pin for top (4) LED, pinout: 1: 5V, 2: N/C, 3/4/5: RGB Gnd, 6: N/C
bottom 12 pin (6) LED, pinout 1: 5V, 2: N/C 3/4/5: Right RGB Gnd, 6/7/8: Left RGB Gnd, 9/10/11/12: N/C

XPS 700/710 front panel are 40 pin (20x2)
XPS 720 front panel is 28 pin (14x2)
the front I/O panel on the 700 has a 40 pin connection and new 720 MOBO has 28 pin
720 (28 pin)

The 710 has 2 x sets of LEDs in the front grille with 5 wire cables from each that plug into the FRNT_PNL PCB. All seven colour combinations and OFF are available using all the binary numbers between 000 and 111 and can be managed using 3 ON/OFF toggle switches.
