Why is Dell notifying me to perform an update for a brand of SSD that is *NOT* installed in my XPS8940?

A few months ago, I began regularly receiving update notification emails from Dell---I guess I must've asked for them, don't remember---with the Subject line, "New updates available for XPS 8940".  The most recent one links to an update for a brand of NVMe drive that is *not* installed in my PC.  Specifically, this recent email notofication is recommending a firmware update for a "SSSTC CL4 Solid State Drive", "SSSTC" being the brand.  However, the brand of NVMe drive that is actually installed in my XPS8940 is *Samsung*.

Why is Dell urging me to install a firmware update for a brand of NVMe drive that is *not* installed in my PC?

Thanks for any advice.

Hey everyone,

Please disregard the message regarding Dell Update. It seems it was mentioned out of habit, and they didn't realize it was going to be discontinued. I'll escalate this issue again and ask for further guidance.

In the meantime, please message me with your service tag, as this information is usually requested to determine if it's a global issue or specific to certain models.

If you prefer, please contact tech support by clicking on the Get Help Now button located at the bottom right corner of this page. We'll be able to retrieve the tags from the cases generated through this chat.

Thanks!

@RoHe Thanks, but are you saying I should UNsubscribe from the Dell "update" notifications altogether?  Some of the ones I've received in the last couple of months have been for BIOS or chipset updates with very recent release dates.

NO!

If the file that the email pointed to didn't work, go back and read all the info on it by expanding the sections on the Support page for the file.

If it FAILS to install, check the LOG FILE and if you see it couldn't find the device to be updated IGNORE the email. Or report to this forum what happened.

KEEP getting Dell Emails though, this is probably the 2nd one in almost 5 years that were like this.

@ispalten Thank you, and I intend to follow your advice to *not* unsubscribe, but I'm unclear about the relevance to my OP of this part of what you're saying:

"If the file that the email pointed to didn't work, go back and read all the info on it by expanding the sections on the Support page for the file.

If it FAILS to install, check the LOG FILE and if you see it couldn't find the device to be updated IGNORE the email. Or report to this forum what happened."

My current situation as described in my OP involves an update to a major device that is *not* installed in my PC.  How does the advice of yours that I've quoted here apply to my OP?  I appreciate your advice, I'm just seeking clarification.

Thank you.

If SupportAssist is running on your PC, does it offer this irrelevant update to you?

If you enter your Service Tag on the support site, does it offer that update? (Don't post Service Tag here.)

If not, then you could unsubscribe from those emails and just manually check for updates for your Service Tag maybe once/month or so, and/or let SupportAssist do it.

@RoHe Yes, Support Assist is running on my PC, and yes, it *does* offer that irrrelevant update to me.

Yes, when my Service Tag is entered on the support page, that irrelevant update is offered.

Definitely something wrong with their database(s).

I pinged a Dell contact...

@RoHe

Probably not the database... I had looked at the 'applied to' and it did list (poorly) M.2 2230 SSD at various sizes. However, it was clearly not for Western Digital SSD's.

The actual description:

============

Driver and description
This package contains the firmware for SSSTC CL4 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB, Revision 25301115. Storage firmware is a microcode that is embedded on storage devices such as hard drives or solid state drives. The firmware manages the functionality of the devices.
Criticality  Version  Release Date
Recommended  2530.1115, A05  17 December 2024

============

The 'manufacturer' was not present.

It IS fixed now, just tested it, and I even found a 'new' update which worked:

That it appears was an easy fast fix.

Support Assist used to run Dell Update, but since Dell Update is no longer supported at the end of the year, that update function was put into Support Assist.

Anyway you check for updates, assuming you are signed in, your configuration is used to check against all the files that are for specific device and those are for your PC then being offered if you have an older version installed.

If you didn't login to the Support page or just selected XPS8940 vs. the one with your Service Code, you would get ALL the files available for an 8940. Many, like a lot of the video drivers would clearly not be for your XPS.

Errors are made, and Intel bothers me the most. Always offers up the WRONG video driver and I had to HIDE it some Intel's Driver and Support Assistant didn't keep telling me I had an update:

I also replaced the 8940 M.2 Wireless card with an Intel WiFi 7 BE200... and that same program for MONTHS would not see that card, so I had to search Intel's database often to find the device updates (they had quite a few once WiFi 7 was the official standard). Now that it sees it I do get update notices for it.

Intel Driver and Support Assist should be by Dell installed on your XPS and running all the time. If not, get it and install it.

I should note that even if Intel should notify you of an HD750 (the on-board video installed on all 11th Gen Intel CPU's other than F models) when you go to install it it suggests you get it from your PC maker as changes from Intel's code might have to be made.

@ispalten Yes, thanks, I do have Intel Driver and Support Assistant installed (and, like you, have also had issues with it).

Hi everyone,

As per our engineering team's response, please ensure that your "Dell Update" application is up to date. If the issue persists, try uninstalling and reinstalling the application.

I've read that Dell Update is being phased out as of tomorrow (Dec 31 2024), in favor of SupportAssist.  Can you clarify this?

@vallis

It is, but this subject was also initially about EMAIL, not Dell Update. The database for the Update was wrong. I did report this and it was updated later.

Of course, Dell Update also reported it wrong, either run independently, via the Service Code Support Page to find Updates (via Dell Update) or Support Assist. Once the file information was corrected then this was fixed.
