Studio XPS 9000 cpu cooler

The cooler has a tall air duct or chimney to get air from side to blow on heatsink, there is also a small 90 mm rear exhaust fan next to it.  The 90mm fan may be meant to exhaust hot air around the cpu heatsink after cold air being blown across it.

The tall chimney like air duct may be designed to take in cold room air via side panel air vent. But the bigger side panel air vents are all the way at bottom, and there are fishnet tiny air vent holes in the middle of side panel in proximity to cpu cooler chimney.  How much cold room air can those tiny holes get in?  Strange inefficient cooling design.

the chimney air duct can be removed from the rest of cooler.

this cooler has 4 detachable parts:

  • aluminum heatsink with copper core
  • plastic LGA1366 ring with 4 #6-32 screws
  • fan
  • airduct (chimney)

the plastic duct is connected to the fan by small fishhook clips x 4.

the fan is connected to the LGA ring by similar hooks.

this is what the cooler looks like after removing the air duct

it was very dusty as the chimney air duct traps a lot of dust on top of heatsink which is hard to clean as it is blocked by the fan at the bottom of a chimney/well.

That so-called vent does look restrictive.

After the chimney air duct is removed, I am able to clean up the oem heatsink and reinstall it.  Now it looks like a decent looking and not weird looking air cooler.

No such model, XPS 9000. Do you mean the Studio XPS 435T/9000?

yes. It is easier to call it 9000/9100 and also avoid confusion w studio XPS 435 MT.
