Studio XPS 8100, BIOS service tag red box

Need tool to delete red box in Studio XPS 8100 BIOS service tag field.

Currently there is a solid red rectangle filling the service tag field. I prefer to have it blank instead of solid red box.

Not sure how it got there in the first place?

tried the Dell live image 3.0.iso, burnt it on a DVD, press F12 to boot from dvd, choose DOS based Service tag utility option.  DOS>CLS.  DOS>C:

DOS>cd util

DOS>asset /s new service tag

I got an error: this machine does not support an asset/service tag.

solution:

actually I spent all this time not knowing it would be that simple.  just navigate to the red box of service tag in bios, and enter, it lets me type in a new service tag, enter again, it got saved, and it is no longer editable.

If you had the same issue and were successful in removing it please reply.  I am not sure if the following tool would work

Hello Red, that is the wrong tool.  Asset tag vs. service tag.

This thread has the correct info on proper tool.

Thanks, chino.  I am surprised Dell has kept this old link active.  Dell does a good job in documentation archive and retrieval, to say the least, compared to HP or Lenovo.

I will give it a try to see it works magic.
