Self Monitoring System has reported that a parameter has exceeded its normal operating range

Hey there Dell Community

I'm new to the community and I'm not that technology able.

I was hoping that I could get some help and guidance please.  Would anyone in the community know why I am receiving this message when starting my computer?

Thank you so much for your help I really appreciate it.

What model computer?  Alway include model number on any initial post.

Run the Dell diagnostics and in particular the hard drive diagnostics.  This indicates the hard drive is starting to fail.  Backup the entire drive (all partitions), if you haven't done it, with a program such as the free (and popular) Macrium Reflect to a separate drive, so you can recover.

Macrium Software | Reflect Free Edition

When/if you replace the drive consider an SSD instead of conventional hard drive.

fireberd,

They have a 2017 XPS One 2720. It shipped with a 2TB HDD and the 32GB mSATA SSD.

So it could be either the 2T HDD or the 32 GB mSATA SSD drive that's failing.

The mSATA SSD is used as a cache for the HDD so the first thing that probably should be done is to disable the cache. Then back up the HDD on external media as @fireberd said.

  1. To disable mSATA cache, you do that using IRST (Intel Rapid Storage Technology)
  2. Start>Run:type in Intel Rapid Storage Technology and click OK
  3. When that opens, click on Accelerate tab and select Disable acceleration
  4. Now you may see a new Make available option on the same tab. Click it to completely disassociate the mSATA SSD from the cached HDD
  5. Reboot PC and confirm normal startup

Once the cache is disabled and the HDD backed up, re-run the diagnostics to see if it still reports a drive failure. If the error doesn't reappear, that suggests the 32-GB SSD may have been the cause, but make regular backups of the HDD, just in case...

If you decide to replace the HDD with a large SSD, you won't need the mSATA SSD so it can be removed from the PC.

SMART Hard Drive Failure.  This message comes from BIOS.

On a DELL system this shows up as
Error Code 2000-0151

Hard Drive incorrect status 3E

Smart Predictive Failure

SELF MONITORING SYSTEM has reported that a parameter has exceeded its normal operating range". This message shows a problem with your hard drive.

Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting technology

Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting technology (S.M.A.R.T.) was developed by a number of major hard disk drive manufacturers in a concerted effort to increase the reliability of drives. It is a technology that enables the PC to predict the future failure of hard disk drives. S.M.A.R.T. technology has become an industry standard for hard drive manufacturers.

Through the Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting technology modern hard disk drives incorporate a suite of advanced diagnostics that monitor the internal operations of a drive and provide an early warning for many types of potential problems. When a potential problem is detected, the drive can be repaired or replaced before any data is lost or damaged.

Your hard drive should be replaced IMMEDIATELY to avoid 100 percent loss of data.  It may already be too late.

Hey there

Thank you so much for providing support and guidance on this issue I really do appreciate you taking the time to help.

Based on my limited skills with technology I think my model computer is a Dell XPS One 2720.

I have all my data backed up to OneDrive however I'll also go ahead and do what you've recommended and back it up using Macrium Reflect.

Thank you very much

Hey there RoHe

Thanks for you recommendation I really appreciate it.  I've attempted to follow through on what you have suggested however it is a little bit beyond my technology capability and I wasn't successful. I will need to find a technical repair place that work on Dell in Melbourne and have them take a look at it and see how they can help.

Thank you so much for your guidance.

Hope you find a reliable shop that can help you. You could give them this link to the XPS One 2720 Owners Manual, if that's of any benefit...

Post back and let us know what happens...
