Realtek Update Without Waves MaxxAudio Pro
For my XPS 8960, there is an update to the Realtek HD audio driver. According to Dell, "This audio driver requires the Waves MaxxAudio Pro or Dell Optimizer application to be installed to have full functionality." I removed both from my XPS 8960.
The update is "Recommended", not "Critical".
I'm not going to reinstall Waves MaxxAudio Pro or Dell Optimizer just to be able to install a non-critical update. Also, Dell says that these applications are only required "to have full functionality" of the driver update.
What functionality will I be missing if I update the driver without one of those two applications installed?

Without Waves MaxxAudio Pro being installed, your machine will lose the functionality of selectable input device and audio enhancement features.

So, what I would be losing is whatever I would get from Waves, but the Realtek driver will still get updated?

Yes, the Realtek audio driver should be able to be updated by itself. The requirements of Waves MaxxAudio Pro was to provide users with control of audio interface.
From past experience, when you update the Realtek Audio driver, it would triggered the update of Waves MaxxAudio Pro automatically.

Yes, that's what happened to me.
Updating the driver didn't restore the MaxAudio app (i.e., the user interface) but it did restore the three executables that I had to manually uninstall once again, as described in my earlier post.
All is well now, but I wouldn't choose to update the Realtek driver again, unless for a bug fix.

Next time you want to uninstall Waves, use Revo Uninstaller (free). After it runs an automated uninstall, it shows the left-over files (in bold) on several screens. Check each bold entry listed and then click Delete before moving to next Revo screen.
Never delete anything Revo marks in red and be sure to allow Revo to set a system restore point before it uninstalls anything, to be safe.

Depends on how things are set up. On some PCs, eg XPS 8930, the Realtek driver and Waves come together as one single package. So if there's a Realtek update, Waves gets uninstalled along with existing driver and then the new driver and Waves get installed together.
On other PC models, they're separate independent installations...
