Our users will need more data before they can assist.

* What specific Dell computer model?
* What specific  NVMe drive?
* What operating system is installed?

I see more than 20 solid state firmware updates on the XPS 8940 drivers page for Windows 11.

Computer is a Dell XPS 8940

Purchased May-21-2021

Motherboard:  Dell 0427JK ver: A00

Service tag: <Private data removed from public view.>

Expressive Service Code: <Private data removed from public view.>

Windows 11:  All drivers and software are up to date

Processor            11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-11700 @ 2.50GHz (2.50 GHz)

Installed RAM    32.0 GB (31.6 GB usable)

Device ID             172FE9F7-FB03-47B1-8955-E1B217C3377C

Product ID           00325-82141-64705-AAOEM

System type       64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

-------

SSD drive at the center of the issue (and the only SSD installed): KBG40ZNS512G (BG4 series) NVMe KIOXIA 512GB

-------

I have reviewed all SSD related drivers listed for my computer (for both Windows 10 and 11).  There are two listed for mfgr Kioxia but neither state they are compatible with my SSD (KBG40ZNS512G NVMe KIOXIA).  I have also search for drivers on Microsoft's website with any matches or statement of equivalence.

By deleting drivers I have been able to get Windows 11 to automatically identify a driver as a system's update.  Windows attempts to install at pre-boot but error message appears "Firmware update failed"

Also, I updated BIOS settings as per instruction on several related postings ...

- System Configuration > SATA: RAID ON  {Changed to AHCI}

- System Configuration > SMART Reporting  {Change to select “Enable SMART Reporting”}

@Dteam-user

Check this Dell forum page ===> https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/xps-desktops/xps-8940-error-with-nvme-firmware-although-no-symptoms/647fa1c8f4ccf8a8de7169ca and it is old, but no solution either. Does have some suggestions to try.

I had previously identified that and had appended by own post (which I just updated).  I noted another interesting point that is likely reflective of Windows' failed firmware upgrade attempt.

Device Manager shows NVMe Firmware = 10.41.01.06

BUT!! Dell Update app (under System Information) shows NVMe firmware = 1041.0105

I have not been able to locate either of these two versions (or any firmware version) specific to my Kioxia SSD for download (not on Kioxia, Dell, Microsoft or general Googling).  Kioxia website reports that this model is specific to Dell and to go to Dell for support.  It is very strange not to be able to find support anywhere and especially strange that a product build specific to just Dell has no support on Dell website.

That probably explains the FAIL...

Forget where the period are. Many drivers, like even the Nvidia ones in release 'title' have extra dots in the name, but the payload has more...

So it is possible that you actually have 10.41.01.05 you are trying to install, which is back-level and the F/W may not allow that and there for fails?

So my KIOXIA SSD is custom manufactured and specific to just Dell.  As such there is no direct support by Kioxia.  How do I get support out of Dell?

Other users Dell Support postings describe the same exact problem straight from first power up as was the case for me.  These posts cite Kioxia SSD of various models and Dell computers of several models.  This includes the one that both you and I independently identified that specific refers to Dell XPS 8940 (same model as my computer).  However, none of the postings culminate in a resolution and any proposed steps recommended withing these posts do not solve my problem nor did they solve the problem for the owners of the posts.

How can there not have been a defined resolution if this has been a known reoccuring issue occuring as far back as 2020?
