Need help to free up space with windows 10 on my dell pc

Running Windows 10 on a Dell XPS desktop and storage is getting really tight.  The system c drive has only 5GB free space left. And the PC runs slower lately, updates complain about low space, and the C drive keeps filling up even after deleting some files. Not totally sure what’s safe to remove and what might break things in order to free up more space in Windows 10.

Looking for practical advice from people who’ve dealt with this before. Built-in Windows tools, common space hogs to check, or smart cleanup tips would be great. Trying to free up space on pc without messing up the system.

Thanks in advance

Running out of space on your Windows 10 Dell XPS can slow down your PC and cause update issues. Here's a practical, step-by-step guide to free up space on Windows 10 using built-in tools and good cleanup practices:

1. Use Storage Sense & Built-in Cleanup Tools

a. Run Storage Sense:

Go to Settings > System > Storage.
Turn on Storage Sense.
Click Configure Storage Sense or run it now.
Enable automatic cleanup options like deleting temporary files, recycle bin contents, and previous Windows installations if applicable.

b. Use Disk Cleanup:

Press Windows + S, type Disk Cleanup, and open it.
Select Drive C:.
Click Clean up system files (requires admin).
Check options like:
Temporary files
Recycle Bin
Previous Windows installations (if you've recently upgraded Windows and no longer need old files)
Thumbnails
Click OK to delete.

2. Identify & Remove Large Files & Folders
Use File Explorer:
Go to This PC > Local Disk (C:).
Use the Search bar to find large files: type size:>100MB.
Review and delete or move unnecessary large files.

Consider cleaning your Downloads folder, Desktop, and Documents of unneeded files for free up space on Windows 10 .

How to free up space on Windows 10? You can manually Remove Windows Update Files. If you want to manually clear update files beyond Disk Cleanup, you can:

1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator:
Press Windows + X and select Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).

2. Run the following command:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

This command removes superseded (old) update files and reduces the size of the component store.

To further clean up, run:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore

To see how much space can be reclaimed.

Running your computer with only 5GB of free space remaining on the C drive can cause significant lag and prevent Windows updates. The good news is that using WizTree on your Dell XPS computer allows you to safely reclaim substantial amounts of space (typically 20-50GB) without compromising system stability.

How to free up space on Windows 10

  1. Download WizTree from the official website, install it, and run it with administrator privileges.
  2. Select the C drive and click “Scan”. Within seconds, a comprehensive visual map of disk usage will be generated.
  3. Focus on these common space hogs:
    C:\Users [your username]\AppData\Local\:
    Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Cache (browser cache may reach several GB);
    Microsoft\Teams (meeting caches can consume substantial space);
    Temp folder (all internal files can be safely deleted);
    C:\Users [your username]\Downloads (often forgotten download folder);
    C:\ProgramData\McAfee or other antivirus software logs
    Game launcher folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\.

Important Notes:
Only delete files within folders you recognise (such as personal user folders, downloads folders, cache folders). Exercise extreme caution when freeing up space on Windows 10: never arbitrarily delete files from C:\Windows, C:\Program Files, or C:\ProgramData unless you are absolutely certain of their purpose.

Hi

I start with a command like...

del C:\*.tmp /s

Then I use Ccleaner.

There is no method of free up space that will permanently solve your problem.  Replace your boot drive with a larger capacity SSD is a practical advise I can think of.  Not only it will solve your free space issue, the system performance will be improved greatly as well.

I use Directory Report to find out where my disk space is being used

In addition to a larger SSD:

  1. Make sure all important files/data are backed up outside of PC.
  2. Add a storage drive.
