Dell 6 Beeps. Need to restart a few times.

There is a 6 beeps sound.

For one of my Dell computer, I have to keep switching on and off. It takes a few times of switching on and off to boot up.

Once the computer is booted up, I can use it for a long period of time without any problem.

The problem is that I have to keep switching on and off just to use this computer.

Any idea how to solve this?

I had disabled the "turn on fast startup" under the power button as recommended by some. But the same problem persists.

In general, 6 beeps is a video card error (Video BIOS Test Failure) on most XPS PC models (excluding XPS 8940).

So start by carefully re-seating the video card in its PCI-e slot. And then make sure the video cable is correctly/securely connected to video card and to monitor after you close the case.

If the beep code continues, try clearing the error by resetting BIOS:

  1. Power off, unplug
  2. Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
  3. Open case and remove motherboard battery (check your specific Service Manual for details)
  4. Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
  5. Reinstall the battery (Time for a fresh CR2032 3-volt coin cell battery? ~$2)
  6. Close up and connect mouse, monitor and keyboard
  7. Reboot

Problem solved!

It is the video card.

I had re-seated the video card and spray contact cleaner on the slot, card, plug and socket of the video cable.

Always include your model's name and number so we can help. Beep codes can be found in your online manual.

It may be a POST error that causes beeps that the pc eventually passes after a few trials, analogous to a borderline student who had to repeat taking SAT tests after multiple fails before being admitted to college. Try reset CMOs jumper on motherboard and replace CMOs battery with new one.

@franktoh5  Glad you got it sorted.  I figured it had to be the video card....

For future reference, the XPS blink and beep codes are here (except XPS 8940, which are in its own service manual).
