Build 27813+, Bios update XPS_8940_2.6.0.exe installs DBUtilDrv2.sys that cannot be loaded.

After updating a DELL XPS 8940 to Canary Build 27813.1000 I had to update the BIOS to latest version 2.26.0 that was released by Dell on March 13, 2025. When I tried to install it from Canary 27813.1000, I got a message stating the driver DBUtilDrv2.sys could not be loaded, "A driver cannot load on this device" A security setting is detecting this as a vulnerable driver and blocking it from loading. You'll need to adjust your settings to load this driver.
I think this driver gets installed on Canary Build by mistake, because it does not install on any other 24H2 Builds, either insider or public, using the same exact XPS_8940_2.26.0.exe. The problem only happens on this Canary Build.
I think Microsoft and Dell need to sort this out and fix the problem on Canary Build and eliminate the bad driver.

Why is the BIOS update exe still installing a driver that has a known problem?

To get rid of the problem I had to restore a good image backup of my system 27813.1000 saved before this Bios update attempt. Then I updated the BIOS using a 24H2 system that is in multiboot on the same machine. The exact same XPS_8940_2.26.0.exe updated the BIOS correctly without installing the bad driver DBUtilDrv2.sys.

I can reproduce the problem only with Windows Canary Build 27813.1000.

There is no trace of that bad DBUtilDrv2.sys on the other 24H2 Builds either insider or public.

@fgg2009

The FEEDBACK is basically the same as posted here.

There is another subject, https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/xps-desktops/xps-8940-new-bios-2260/67d3741bc6c49b50eac0abc0 that is reporting freezes with the .26 update. Are you seeing this?

No, I have not seen any freeze here.

I installed 2.26.0 Bios on two machines.

The only problem I got was the one described above and only when installing with Windows Canary Build 27813.1000.

Looks like there is a problem with the XPS_8940_2.26.0.exe which installs the bad driver only with Windows Insider Canary Build. Dell should try that out and eliminate the mistake.

Thanks.

I had the same issue updating the BIOS on an XPS 9310.  What worked was using the BIOS File on a USB Stick and updating through the one-time boot menu (F12).  I then removed to DBUtildrv2.sys file through Device Driver Setting by searching for the bad SYS File.

@witkoskijp

That is a workaround, but why is DBUtildrv2.sys even installed by the XPS_8940_2.26.0.exe when it should not?

Seems like DELL cannot even recognize that insider Canary Build 27813 is a Windows 11 Build.

To avoid the problem, they should not install the bad driver in the first place like they do with all the other Windows 11 24H2 Builds.

They definitely have a bug in their logic. 😎🤷‍♂️

Apologies, I'm on an alienware m16 that just did a bios update.

If you had the same problem.

That would mean it is a general issue that Dell has with Windows 11 Canary Builds, and they need to fix it.
