Bios Updates after Warranty Expiration

Someone on this forum said that one should not install bios updates after the warranty has expired. I would like to hear what opinions others have, pro and con.

I assume that was posted to prevent bricking the MB if the BIOS update fails. Under warranty the MB would be replaced as opposed to a charge outside of warranty. My opinion...if the system is working fine with no other reason to update the BIOS, then leave well enough alone. The forum is full of posts dealing with BIOS updates gone wrong. If you look at MB manufacturers such as MSI, ASUS, Gigabyte, etc., they post notices on their BIOS update pages stating if the MB is running fine then they do not recommend updating the BIOS.

Even if it's out of warranty, your PC (what model?) should support BIOS Recovery 2 or 3, so there's always a chance you can recover from a failed BIOS update.

Depending on the exact model, there may be specific options you should enable in BIOS setup now, that could help prevent or help recover from a failed update.

And you may want to disable UEFI Capsule Updates in BIOS setup (if that option is offered on your PC model) to prevent Windows Update from force-installing BIOS updates, which it can do without warning or permission. So even if you decide not to install a BIOS update, that won't stop WU from doing it when you're not looking, unless you disable Capsule Updates.

NOTE: After every BIOS update, you have to re-enable some BIOS options and disable Capsule Updates, again...
