Use smartcard reader on VM via Opti 3000

Hello,

We have a physical machine that we want to replace and migrate to a virtual environment.

  • VMware - vSphere
  • Windows 11 virtual machine
  • Dell Wyse Optiplex 3000 client with ThinOS
  • Smart card reader: ACS 38U

ThinOS version: 2411 (9.5.4070)

In the admin policy settings, MAP drive, sound, smart card, etc., are all enabled. The same settings are also applied under the RDP connection settings.

When the smart card reader is connected to the client, we can see that it is recognized. If we insert a card, the client detects it as well.

We connect to the VM via RDP.

However, inside the VM, the device manager does not show the connected card reader at all.
(Cross-test: If I plug the smart card reader into a Windows 11 laptop without installing any drivers or software, the device manager immediately recognizes it and lists it properly.)

So, logically, the smart card reader should also appear in the virtual Windows 11 machine.

The issue:

Inside the VM, there is a specific software that we need to use. Interestingly, this software detects that the smart card reader is connected, but it does not read the inserted card.

Tried to install drivers in VM, but nothing changed.

Any ideas?

Regards-

From the Release Notes, Smart Card is only supported for Broker login with RDS.

Dear Scott H,

 Thank your for your reply.
I'm not sure if we can configure our system to connect this stand-alone VM-Windows trougth broker.

We tried one of our old Windows 7 Embdeed Wyse client and it works like a charm.

Could you suggest a Wyse - Thin OS version which also supported with standard RDP connection withour broker?

Or, - i'm not sure if its possible - but what if i install embedded W11 to our Optiplex 3000 or Wyse 5070?

For ThinOS9, if you are using a direct RDP connection and not a broker.

  1. in your WMS Policy
    1. Broker> Global Broker Settings> Set Broker type to None
      1. This removes the login box at startup
    2. Session Setting>RDP and AVD Settings
      1. Scroll to the bottom and add as many D"RDP Direct Connection Collections" you need
