Upgrade from ThinOS 8.6 6108 to ThinOS 2203 (9.3.1129) Fails
We are using On-Premise Wyse Management Suite 3.7 458 with a Pro license. The thin client is a Wyse 5070 Extended running ThinOS 8.6.6108
I uploaded and configured WMS group policy to update the ThinOS firmware, BIOS, and packages.
When I power on the thin client it takes most of the updates but the ThinOS update fails after downloading. The following shows in the event log:
[2022-06-03 15:41:20.178] wms: start to download file 'ThinOS_2205_9.3.1129.pkg-V9.3.1129'...
[2022-06-03 15:42:47.931] wms: ThinOS_2205_9.3.1129.pkg-V9.3.1129 has been downloaded completely.
[2022-06-03 15:43:00.832] Package: upgrading Root to version: 1129 /tmp/ThinOS_2205_9.3.1129.pkg-V9.3.1129_raw.pkg ...
[2022-06-03 15:43:19.534] Package: upgrading result - FAILED
[2022-06-03 15:43:19.693] wms: Failed to install packages. error: ["wms: failed to install Root version: 9.3.1129, error: FAILED"]
Does anyone have an idea of what might be going wrong and what else to check? Thanks.

Please confirm which version of ThinOS you are trying to upgrade from and to. The above message does not make sense.
There is no 8.6.6108
9.3.1129 is a very old 9.1 build.
You do not assign a 9.1 pacakage to an 8.6 device.
The Release notes for ThinOS 2205 (the latest) outlines the required upgrade process.

Wow! I really embarrassed myself with this one. I called 9.1.6108 "8.6.6108" consistently without catching the mistake and I know better. 🤦 9.3.1129 is correct and it isn't old. (Sorry, my brand of dumb is contagious) It's also known as ThinOS 2205 which is the current build that came out in the end of May. This warrants a repost below with the correct details:

I myself have upgraded from 9.1.6108 to 9.3.1129(2205) without issue. Since you have a Pro license for WMS, I'd suggest opening a ticket with Dell Support, unless you find someone else who has had this issue here.

Just giving an update on the topic. I have successfully upgraded four other ThinOS devices so this doesn't seem like it will be a widespread issue. I have a support case open with Dell Wyse and we have determined that there is something wrong with this thin client's SSD that is causing the upgrade to fail. If we look at "System Info" on the client we can see that the SSD Size incorrectly states that it is 0 MB. This is a problem unique to this particular thin client. The Support Engineer is creating a work order request so I can get it fixed or replaced.

Thanks for following up and clarifying. Glad to hear it isn't systemic.

Did support replace this thin client? I am running into the same situation with one of my 5470's.

Support fixed my thin client and sent it back. I no longer have that issue.

I know this thread is over a year old, but wanted to share my experience after coming up against a similar issue once hitting ThinOS_2205_9.3.1129. Most of our terminals are 3040s and we've been incrementing the versions since ThinOS 8.
We recently found that a large number of terminals would not update past ThinOS_2205_9.3.1129, throwing error: Package Root failed to install.
The process I found to actually get them to upgrade beyond ThinOS_2205_9.3.1129 was to use the following process:
2. Downgrade to DTOS_9.1Full_9.1.3112.pkg-V9.1.3112
3. Update to DTOS_9.1Full_9.1.3129.pkg-V9.1.3129
Once this was done we can now update to the latest release.
I'd also configured our update group to wipe certificates from the terminals as they're re-applied by the production policy.

Hello,
I'm also struggling with this problem and as seen on another forum, it seems that the problem arises when a wyse is initially installed via a dell wyse image on key. You see 12 software appear in the “Installed applications” tab
It would be enough to uninstall the unwanted software...but I don't see how to do it via WMS other than by checking "uninstall" of "Firmware" and "Application package update"
If someone has an idea
