upgrade to 3.5 fails because "failed to grant folder level permission for LocalRepo"

Hello,

i cant upgrade to the latest version because the installer doesnt find the local Repo. It seems the setting isnt correctly there (and i dont know where to set) :

2021-12-16 T15:14:12::CustomFunctions::6158::In Function Grant FolderLevelPermission
2021-12-16 T15:14:12::CustomFunctions::6164::cmd:"" /grant WMSUser:(OI)(CI)F /T
2021-12-16 T15:14:12::CustomFunctions::6167::Failed to grant folder level permission to folder: The handle is invalid.

2021-12-16 T15:14:12::Upgrade::611::failed to grant folder level permission for LocalRepo, hence restoring...

Any way to fix this?

I have seen this where the registry is missing the proper key.

Try the following.

Backup the server first (always) prior to editing the registry.

make sure you are following a supported upgrade path

https://dl.dell.com/content/manual61169974-dell-wyse-management-suite-version-3-x-release-notes.pdf?language=en-us&ps=true

. Open registry as administrator

  1. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE:\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
  2. Identify the uninstall key bunch of WMS by doing a window find with product name “Dell Wyse Management Suite” on the above registry

  1. Create a New registry key of type string with key value pair as mentioned below under WMS uninstall key bunch identified in the previous step

Key:  “LocalRepository”

Value:

Hi buffalobound!  I may be a bit of a newb when it comes to registry, but from your suggestions I seem to have the proper keys in place.  Any suggestions?

And actually now that I re-read the error logs, I am not having issues with it granting permissions to the local repo, but to the main WMS directory:

2021-12-20 T13:58:24::CustomFunctions::6160::In Function Grant FolderLevelPermission
2021-12-20 T13:58:24::CustomFunctions::6166::cmd:"E:\DELL\WMS\" /grant WMSUser:(OI)(CI)F /T
2021-12-20 T13:58:25::CustomFunctions::6169::Failed to grant folder level permission to E:\DELL\WMS\ folder: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

2021-12-20 T13:58:25::Upgrade::641::failed to grant folder level permission, hence restoring...

Hi. Thanks for the great information. I have the 'LocalRepository' key present, but it's value is currently blank. I don't have a 'Repo' or 'Repository' folder to point it at. I'm currently on version 3.3.1 trying to upgrade to 3.5.2.

Should I be looking for a particular folder? maybe named something else?

*EDIT* - The person who installed this placed the 'LocalRepo' folder on the Drive. Found it now

I've spent the last month and a half with Dell support getting nowhere and in the end I think their efforts to fix the issue have caused more problems as I can no longer access any of my device details and even more concerning it seems that all config policies have been corrupted.

The best Dell offered was a fresh build on 3.5.2 from scratch but because I am on the standard version of WMS and not Pro they will not assist with a DB migration to prevent me from losing everything I built years ago so I am pretty much SOL on any further help unless I throw money at it, and even then I have no assurance they'll even help or be successful.

If you have the Pro version of WMS, you may have better luck if you engage Dell Support, but if you don't then good luck.

What's incredibly frustrating as Dell had changed how the application works by suddenly introducing this WMSUser as well as the new Software Vault.  Two things that did not exist in version 3.3 and yet I struggle to get answers on what these are even for.

We are having trouble upgrading as well.  Our LocalRepository key seems to be set correctly and has a matching folder structure.  Instead of falling down on the repository permissions, ours seems to fall down on the install directory instead. (C:\Program Files\DELL\WMS)

2022-2-3 T14:56:01::CustomFunctions::6166::cmd:"C:\Program Files\DELL\WMS" /grant WMSUser:(OI)(CI)F /T

2022-2-3 T14:56:17::CustomFunctions::6169::Failed to grant folder level permission to C:\Program Files\DELL\WMS folder: The handle is invalid.

2022-2-3 T14:56:17::Upgrade::650::failed to grant folder level permission, hence restoring...

I have engaged Dell support and my issue has been escalated to an engineer.  I still haven't heard from said engineer.  We will see.

Good luck!  Hopefully you have a better experience than I did

Have you tried adjusting permissions on the folder?   Do you want to share what they look like I can compare to mine?
