RDP Speed Issues - T50
RDP Speed Issues - T50
Hi all.
I've posted previously relating to this issue, but given the amount of spam on this forum (don't get me started!) I feel best to post a new thread to make clear my issues.
We connect to a server farm comprised of 3 Terminal Servers running Windows Server 2008 with a broker handling load balancing.
With our T50's we have had a multitude of problems, including not being able to define a keyboard layout for the RDP session (forcing it to US).
The worst problem for our users has been speed. When panning around in a document, excel spreadsheet or even inputting text, there is noticeable delay between when the user makes the action, and the action happening on the screen.
Bear in mind we have a multitude of Windows XP and Windows 7 machines that all connect fine, some with far worse specifications than these Wyse box's.
We have tried the Wyse support who, whilst relatively friendly, have only one answer: "Try this new firmware" - each time handing us another 'beta' firmware that nobody else has access to and is not on their website.
Each time the problem is the same, although with the latest firmware we noticed that upon leaving an RDP session we now get an error message we didn't previously have.
As a last resort, we have manually installed 'rdesktop' - a basic Linux RDP client that hasn't been updated in years.
Although this brings a few of it's own problems to the table such as strangely coloured cursor icons, difficult to set up, and no Network Level Authentication (meaning on a load-balanced server you often have to enter your login credentials multiple times), it is fast.
Not quite as fast as a Windows client, but a million years from the Wyse RDP Client.
Now. I've pointed this out to Wyse as I'm happy to try and help.
They have passed this on to their engineers, but then closed my support ticket rather than give me updates (presumably to rescue an already dire SLA).
My question to you, dear users, is has anybody else been experiencing work-crippling lag?
Is it something unique to our systems? Have we just been unfortunate?
Surely this doesn't only affect us?

Hi Rusty,
Yeah, that's pretty much all the Wyse support team were willing to help with, although one chap helped us get rdesktop working as a test.
You're correct, 1.0.27 is the latest they've given me, although it'd be interesting to see a change log to see exactly what was changed?
The latest firmware gives us an error on ending an RDP session.
We've also been given an updated version of the RDP client (rdp_1.0.0-02.038_armel) and another (wyse-rdpclient_1.28.00-05.000_armel).
The first RDP client fixed our issue with the keyboard layout not setting in RDP, the second broke that feature.
Our other issue is numlock not coming on at start, to which we've been given an unofficial 3rd party tool with a lengthy install per-device including editing in vi (nightmare!).
How have your clients been when connecting? Ours seem fine until you try to run anything RDP side, open an Excel doc and try to scroll through... slow!

Acra,
you may want to make sure that you are running at least the latest release of the Firmware, I think it's 1.0.27 since they added a lot of RDP fixes and took care of some of my issues.

Hi,
I have the same speeding problems with RDP connections to our Windows 2008 R2 Terminal Server, it is very very slow while working with MS Office applications.
The latest firmware 1.027 made these speeding problems worse, it is not possible to work with.
I have reverted back to firmware 1.018.
Rene.
