Windows Update KB4074588, break USB keyboard and mouse
Hello,
My Dell Desktop does not recognize my keyboard and mouse once I reach the Windows sign-in screen.
Also, I am able to use my keyboard to enter the BIOS before the Windows sign-in screen. Once in the BIOS screen i can use the keyboard normally as well.
Please advise.

This problem is caused by a faulty windows update.
USB devices may stop working after installing the February 13, 2018 update (KB4074588)
I did and it worked for me. Basically you have to use the media creation tool to create a bootable USB drive, boot your computer to the USB drive, enter the repair facility, get a CMD prompt and type in a long command to roll back the update that causes the problem.

Are you using a wireless keyboard and mouse? If yes try a corded keyboard and corded mouse to see if it works to narrow down if the issue is your wireless keyboard/mouse is communicating with your PC.

can you boot into F12 to run diagnostic?
Turn off your PC, then turn it back on, at the Dell logo tap on the F12 key then it should take you in the menu which has the diagnostic.
You do not need to change anything in the BIOS in order for Windows 10 to recognize your keyboard and mouse.
Did you recently install something new or update some drivers on your PC?

Thanks for your reply.
I am using a wired keyboard and mouse.
Is there a setting I need to change in the BIOS?
How would i boot up in safe mode without signing into windows 10?

If you are able to press F2 or F12 to get into the BIOS and the Boot Menu, this tell me that your PC is recognizing your keyboard, but when it go into Windows that is where it got disconnected to the keyboard. Do you see any lights on your keyboard.
The way I know of boot up in Safe Mode is from Windows 10, but since your keyboard is not working in Windows 10, Try F8 during boot up to see if that can get you into Safe Mode.

It may help if you post the model of your Dell PC. Have you tried connecting your mouse and keyboard to different USB ports?

Thanks for your reply, Vic.
Yes I have tried other ports but as I mentioned in my original post, the keyboard and mouse do not work once the Windows sign-in screen appears; however, they work fine in the BIOS menu.
Please advise.

You didn't post your Dell model info. The reason I asked is that there was a long thread here, https://www.dell.com/community/Desktops-General/XPS-8910-Rear-USB-2-0-ports-not-working/m-p/5098676#M1017699, about keyboard and mouse problems and the USB 2.0 ports.
I would ask that you check Device Manager but I don't see how you can do that without a working keyboard or mouse. Have you tried disconnecting and then re-connecting the mouse and keyboard after Windows starts up? Have you tried connecting a memory stick to see if the USB ports are working and that the memory stick is detected? Have you check the BIOS to make sure the front and rear USB ports are enabled?

There's another thread saying that a recent Win 10 update stopped USB ports from working on some model(s).
But like you, none of those users mentioned which PC model(s) is affected. So no way to know if you all have the same problem.
And the user in that thread who uninstalled an MS update to get things to work again didn't say which update was uninstalled.

Dealt with this issue (dell keyboard and mouse drivers not working) today on an Optiplex 3050 running windows 10 Pro. Though it is one of three identical systems in an office it was the only one affected. KB4074588 was the offending update, once removed and restarted both mouse and keyboard appear to be working. After restart the update was hidden by Windows Update Show/Hide (link provided by dell support).
I will note that using my remote software I was able to use its virtual keyboard and mouse without issue while trying to resolve the issue. In device manager both the keyboard and mouse show up but without available drivers.
Hope this helps others.

Yes, they did.
If it happens with a wired USB keyboard and mouse ...
read the whole thread carefully for a fix. It was a bad Windows Update that has since been corrected by Microsoft.
