Will not boot

As soon as i turn my computer on i get a black screen that says windows did not start successfully.  A recent hardware or software change might have caused this .  Then it tells me to choose an option and those are "safe mode", safe mode networking", "safe mode comand prompt", "revert back to the same windows configuration" or it has a timer that starts at 30sec. that will start windows if nothing is chosen.
However, each option brings me to a blue screen that says STOP:c0000221unknownHARDERROR\systemroot\system 32\ntd77.d77
I have a inspiron 1000.  I could really use some help please.

At bootup, tap F8 until you get the boot options (you have to keep tapping F8 until the screen comes up). Then select "Last Known Good Configuration" then hit Enter. This should reset the hardware settings to the last one that worked.

I did exactly what you told me to do however, I got a blue screen with the message STOP:c000021unknownHardError\SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll   in the top left corner.  It does not respond after that.  I have windows xp home edition version 2002
