Strange problem in Pictures directory: ghost subfolders

This is a very strange problem that just started occurring:

In my Pictures directory, I have a folder called Canon, where I store my raw Canon image filers. All the subfolders in that Canon folder are appearing in the Pictures directory also. Example:

Pictures > Canon > Cr2_2021
Pictures > Cr2_2021 which is a duplicate

If I delete the Pictures > Cr2_2021 folder, then it is also gone in Pictures >Canon. If I create a new folder Pictures > Canon > TempFolder, then it appears  Picture > TempFolder.

This does not happen in other Pictures > SomeFolder, only the Pictures > Canon folder.

If I look at this directory using  cmd, everything looks fine, so it is a problem with Windows Explorer?

Thanks for any suggestions!

This page at Widsmob may help. The CR2 folder holds Canon raw images.

If you're experiencing ghost subfolders in your Pictures directory, it could be due to a number of reasons. One possibility is that the subfolders were not properly deleted and are still present in the directory's metadata. To fix this issue, you can try rebuilding the metadata using a utility like Disk Utility on macOS or CHKDSK on Windows. Another possibility is that the ghost subfolders are the result of a virus or malware infection. In this case, it's recommended to run a full system scan with a reputable antivirus program to detect and remove any malicious software. It's also a good idea to regularly backup your files to prevent data loss in the event of a system error or malware attack.
