Something went wrong Pin not available, setup pin

When I click to set up a new pin, it says “ doesn’t look like you’re connected to the Internet. Check connection and try again “. My modem is working fine, no problems with other devices. So how can I check my connection if I CAN’T get on my new computer to check??

Please can you confirm the Make Model and OS, along with any configuration details like touch screen, backlit keyboard, SFF or tower etc etc.

Hi

So what went wrong and at what point in the install/initialisation/setup?

To set up a new PIN in Windows 11, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app by pressing the Windows key + I.

  2. In Settings, go to the Accounts section on the left sidebar.

  3. Click on "Sign-in options."

  4. Under "PIN (Windows Hello)," click the "Add" button if you don't have a PIN set yet, or "Change" if you want to set a new PIN replacing the old one.

  5. You will be asked to enter your Microsoft account password to verify your identity.

  6. In the "Set up a PIN" window, enter a numeric PIN of your choice. By default, the PIN has to be at least four digits, but you can also choose to include letters and symbols by checking the option for added security.

  7. Confirm the new PIN by entering it again.

  8. Click OK to finalize the setup.

Your new PIN is now ready to use for signing in to your Windows 11 device. This method provides a quick and secure way to access your account without needing to enter your full password.

Do You Need an Internet Connection to Set Up PIN in Windows 11?

  • If You’re Already Signed In
You do not need an internet connection to set or change your PIN from within a signed-in Windows account. You can do this locally through the Settings app.

  • If You’re Locked Out or Setting Up a Device for the First Time
If you need to reset your PIN after a security change, or are setting up Windows 11 for the first time, you may be required to log in with your Microsoft account—which typically requires internet access. Some error messages specifically state that you must be online to set up a new PIN if your security settings have changed or if you are creating one for a Microsoft account login.

  • Workarounds When No Internet Is Available
During initial device setup, it is possible to bypass the internet requirement via commands or limited setup options (like OOBE bypass). For changing PIN or resetting when locked out, if your device insists on an internet connection, you may need to physically connect to a network, or (if not possible) use local account setup instead of a Microsoft account.
