Thank you Jesse. I read the listing of Windows 10 compatible computers wrong. Live and learn.

Augie107,
Unfortunately, the XPS 8500 Product not tested for Windows 10 upgrade
Dell is not testing or developing Windows 10 drivers for this product. If you choose to upgrade, some features, applications, and connected devices may not work as expected. This doesnt mean that Windows 10 will not work on the computer. It is that Dell did not create any Windows 10 drivers for the computer.
Your system will need the Windows 10 drivers. You may also want to check the bios and change the settings below to see if that will help.
Start the computer and Tap to enter system setup
Press the right-arrow key to highlight Advanced
Press the down arrow key to highlight Onboard Device Configuration, then press Enter.
Press the down arrow key to highlight SATA Mode, press Enter.
Select the option as required, the options are RAID and AHCI. Try changing to AHCI. Save the changes and exit.

Well, tried everything I could think of short of reloading or dropping the box off a two story building. So will try reload next.

Back to Windows 8. None of the backups would play nice. Now to slowly upgrade from there.

Augie here, for follow up. My Dell won't go past basic WIN10 home. Trying to upgrade "blew its mind". So grit my teeth and bought a new computer with WIN10 installed. Old Dell will be loaded with Linux and used for other things.
