nv4_disp

XPS 400

the problem seems to be caused by the file: nv4_disp

it says "the device driver got stuck in an infinite loop. this usually indicates problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly."

how do i fix this??

Reinstall the Nvideo display drivers. Research this on the NVidia support site.

Is there an alternate location to get a procedure to remove the driver?

I too am having the nv4_disp infinite loop error problem and my Geoforce drivers will not completely uninstall so I can put in a new one.

The link in the previous post no longer works and I'm getting ready to pull my hair out.

Hi,

In order to resolve the issue you have to uninistall the old driver completely.

# Uninstall it from Device Manager

# Uninstall it from Control Panel

# Delete Video Driver in Dell Drivers, Program files folder (Dont restart the computer untill this step)

# Reboot the system

# Download the latest driver from the dell website or nVidia website and install it

# Issue will be resolve..If the same issue persists call Dell Support and replace Video card

It's preferable that you uninstall the driver in safe mode.

Ok. I have been through the proceedure a couple dozen times but it is still not working.

So far I've:
Removed the existing nVidia drivers by:
  1. Booting up in Safe Mode
  2. Logging in as Administrator by typing "Administrator" in the account log-in screen (while in safe mode)
  3. Removing the drivers from the Add/Remove Programs menu under Control Panel, then rebooted and logged in as admin again
  4. Uninstalled the drivers from the Device Manager window, rebooted and logged in as admin again
  5. Ran Drive Sweeper 1.5.5 to remove NVIDIA-Display Components
  6. Ran Drive Cleaner Pro to clean out nVidia and nVidia WDM components
  7. Ran Piriform *** Cleaner to fix registry errors

After doing all that, the Geoforce drivers no longer display in the Device Manager any more.  Instead, I now have 3D Video Controller and Video Controller (VGA Compatible) under the Display adapters section. Both have the exclamation point with yellow background on them.

Another note is that even after running all those extra cleaning programs, two nVidia registry entries keep popping up when I run each cleaning program again.

I have downloaded the latest drivers from both the nVidia and Dell web sites.

When I run the setup program that came with the drivers fron the nVidia site, it runs through the process, copies files into a nvidia directory then finishes with a screen that says modifications were NOT made to my system, and to click to finish.

When I try to install both the Dell and nVidia drivers from the Device Manager, the outcome is the same from both versions. Starting with the Hardware Update Wizard, I select the location to look for the unpacked drivers (nVidia site's drivers extract to an nvidia folder, Dell site's drivers extract to the dell>Drivers>R135365 folder) and the wizard starts copying files and installing. An error screen then pops up with the helpfull error, "A paramater is incorrect."

As I mentioned, I've been through the process quite a few times in the past 20 days and the drivers still will not install.  Have I missed something or where am I going wrong?

All help is appreciated.

Thank you,

-Dan

What video card is installed in your system, and what driver(s) have you tried to install already?

I have a Geoforce 7950 GX 2 with 512mb.

From the nVidia site, I downloaded the file: 178.24_geforce_winxp_32bit_english_whql.exe
From the Dell site, I downloaded the file: R135365.EXE
From a third site (xps-wiki.com), I downloaded the files: 17825.exe and 17824.exe

All files resulted in pretty much the same thing.

I wound up paying a LOT for this video card from Dell.  That's why I'm so reluctant to just replace the card as some other site's/forums had suggested.

R135365 does appear to be the latest Dell tested driver for the 7950 card you list.  However, the latest nVidia driver is 180.48 (or this version if you XP and not Vista).  I'd recommend trying that one.

Larry,

The driver you recommended doesn't appear to support the Geoforce 7950.  According to the web site, the lowest that driver supports is the Geoforce 8800 GS.

I'm downloading it to try anyway.  Will it hurt anything?

Thanks for the help,
Dan

To get those links I went to nvidia.com, picked driver downloads, and specified geforce 7 series.

Well, for my particular card, it was a bust.

I tried using the setup that came with the 180.48 driver. It unpacked all the files into an nvidia directory then stopped because it couldn't find any compatible hardware. I then tried updating the driver through the Device Manager and that didn't go through either.

I'm guessing that the 180.48 driver just isn't compatible with the Geoforce 7950 card.

Any idea what to try next?  I think I'm going to try calling Dell support. I just hope I get connected to somebody I can understand.

Thanks,
Dan
