How to use Dell CD to install windows 10

Hi,

We bought several optiplex 3040 that came with windows 7 preloaded, all the machines include a purple cd with windows 10. I follow the instructions to reboot in UEFI mode, access the CD menu and selected to restore the PC, the machine starts working and after it shows that the restore is complete it reboots and shows the same menu all over again. What do I have to do in order to install windows 10 using this CD? what am I doing wrong?

Thank very much for your help

Kind regards!

Never use the provided DVD to install Windows 10. It will be an obsolete old build of Windows 10 meaning you'll essentially need to install Windows 10 twice (clean install the old build then upgrade install the new build). Moreover the optical drive fails to pass SecureBoot.

Download a Windows 10 RS1 .iso direct from Microsoft and make a Bootable USB setup  to utilise the GPT Partition for UEFI BIOS, make sure its FAT32 formatted and make sure your UEFI BIOS settings have Legacy ROMs Disabled, Legacy Boot Disabled and a UEFI Boot with SecureBoot Enabled.

See here for details:

Thank you Philip, I'll use your recomendation. And I discovered that the problem I had with the disk I was trying to use is that I had to disable legacy boot mode in order to succesfully install windows 10.

Just setting to UEFI boot is not enough.

Kind regards

I'm not sure what directions you are using but Restore is usually for returning to factory settings which in your case is windows 7. Start in UEFI mode* and boot to the dvd-cd by tapping F12 as soon as you restart without waiting for any screen. Then select the cd-dvd drive as the boot drive. The first listed directions here should work: * www.dell.com/.../SLN300635

Backup your personal files beforehand because changing to windows 10 from 7 requires a clean install.

If you are still under warranty, use Chat at Dell Support to speak with them for more help with this.

Hi, how are you doing today?

I know this is old, but maybe you can remember, I'm having the same situation with the installation media from Dell in a laptop I bought with Windows 7 pre-installed, but it came with the Windows 10 DVD. I had to replace the hard drive, and I was trying to install Windows 10, but the only options I get when I boot from the DVD are:

1st. Choose the language

2nd. Choose Keyboard Layaout

3rd. Troubleshoot and/or Turn of your PC

4th. Troubleshoot menu

Thank you very much for your help and time, I do appreciate it.
