Disappearing Mouse Pointer

My mouse pointer often disappears about two thirds of the way down the screen. I can't work out why this happens some times and not others, and I don't have a clue why it happens in the first place.

It seems to happen in all programs. I am running XP professional (does that make a difference?) and am using an optical USB mouse, but I think I also had the problem before I started using the mouse (I was using the pointing stick).

It's difficult to describe exactly what happens to the pointer, but here goes. As I move the mouse from the bottom of the screen to the top, the mouse suddenly disappears completely, then reappears gradually as if from behind a screen.

Slightly bizarre problem, and not a very major one, but very annoying! Any ideas?

You describe 2 different cases, from the top down about 2/3's and then your other from the bottom up ,disappearing  and then fading back in. Check your mouse settings closely.

Sorry, it's a hard thing to explain - basically the mouse disappears in a small band, about the height of the mouse pointer and the width of the screen. This band is located about 2/3 of the way down the screen.
