Dell Inspiron R15 5521 with Windows 10 - Issues with Waking Up After Sleep

I got a Dell Inspiron R15 5521 with Windows 10.   The power button on my computer has a tendency to get stuck and thus I am trying to minimize the times that I need to use it.

Is there a way for me to wake the computer up with the mouse or keyboard from sleep mode?

I can currently wake it up from sleep by closing and opening the lid but not by using the mouse or lid.  I have already checked to ensure that I have the latest drivers for both the keyboard and the mouse.  I have also checked their setting and could not find any power management options on my computer.

In addition, I would like know if I can wake the computer up from hibernate mode with mouse, keyboard or lid.

Thanks!

Hi there,

On this system you could try changing the power settings on the system, first you will want to go into the BIOS by pressing F2 at system start up (at the Dell screen), and then under the Advanced tab there will be an option for USB Wake Support. Hopefully once this is changed from Disabled to Enabled it will allow you to have more options for waking the system, and to confirm anything changed I would recommend trying the steps from this link: "

Verify that your device is allowed to wake the computer to resolve this issue follow these steps:
Open the Keyboard control panel item, as described in Method 1.
Click the Hardware tab, and then click Properties.
Click the Change Settings button

Note This step requires Administrator access
Click the Power Management tab, and then verify that the Allow this device to wake the computer is enabled.
Click OK, and then click OK again"

I am hoping once the BIOS settings have been enabled you will be able to change settings under USB devices/keyboard etc. (you will want to check the mouse as well for this tab).

Another option is to try cleaning the power button using a q-tip and some isopropyl alcohol (70-90%) to see if maybe it will unstick.

If nothing resolves the issue please feel free to send me a private message to see about parts that can be purchased to fix the power button.

Best regards,

Brad

Brad,

Thank you for replying to my post.

I have tried your recommended procedure on two computers.

It worked on our older Inspiron 1545 purchased in 2010 initially with Windows 7.   Now it is upgraded to run Windows 10.    I was able to see and set the power management option for the mouse.  Great!

On the Inspiron R15, I have enabled power management during the boot up using the F2 key, but still cannot see any power management option for the mouse using Device Manager!  I checked the drivers on both machines and they are identical.    Up to date.  Microsoft HID Compliant Mouse.  10.0.14393.0   Does Dell have newer drivers that can solve this issue?

Thanks,

Jay

Hi Jay,

Thanks so much for the update, glad to hear it at least worked on one of the systems, let me see if there is anything else we can try. In the meantime in the BIOS can you make sure the USB change stuck after the reboot? And lastly, do you happen to have a USB mouse or keyboard you could try plugging in to see if the option shows up there (you might want to try a few different ports just to see if we can get lucky)? Regardless I will look further on my end.

Best regards,

Brad
