Dell G3 laptop will not reset

I have an old G3 dell laptop and I have been trying to reset it for a month now.  I have tried what feels like everything and I still cannot get it done.  The computer also does not do updates, it tries to install them and ends up undoing it.  I have tried safe mode and still nothing.  I have also tried the various command prompts as well.  What could be causing this and why am I unable to fix it?  Any suggestions or answers are greatly appreciated!
