Dell Display and Peripheral Manager 100% CPU for 60 secondes each time monitor setting is changed

DDPM has a bug in newer versions.

I just bought a new monitor DELL U2724D ( firmware updated M3T103 )

Each time I change monitor settings ( resolution, switch 60 <-> 120 Hz, etc ... ), DDPM.Subagent.User.exe process consumes 100% of 1 CPU for approximatively 60 secondes, resulting in global windows freezes.

I've done multiple tests:

  • the bug is showing only when using HDMI ( never when using DP which works fine )
  • I've tried older DDPM installs, version 2.0.1.16 (DDPM-Setup_2.0.1.16.exe) works fine and does not have the bug. All versions after have the bug including lasted 2.1.0.24
  • The bug workaround is stopping service "Dell TechHub", but of course without this service DDPM cannot connect to monitor.

I'm running Windows 10 22H2 with Samsung Book 2 pro laptop

DDPM seems a huge bug's nest.

Please forward to R&D to fix this.

I can forward more logs or details if needed.

Regards

Thanks for sharing this! I just ran into the same issue with my new Dell U2724D. Confirmed – 100% CPU spike on every setting change when using HDMI. DP works fine. Rolling back to DDPM 2.0.1.16 fixed it for now. Dell seriously needs to patch this in newer versions. Appreciate the workaround tip!

DDPM is a huge mess, installs tons of components including .NET8 runtime, multiple services cores, drivers, and running dozen of processes in memory.

It is far too heavy for the benefit provided.

I've uninstalled and removed it completely.

Instead I am using a free tool X-Mouse Button Control (XMBC) in order to personalize side DELL mouse buttons.

DELL tools like DDPM should be light for the system, else we will be reluctant to use them.

@kariboo agree with you.

too many processes were installed. and they are used too much CPU/MEM resources.

First I was thinking it was an hardware issue and was about to return the brand new monitor. very disturbing.

I was also planing to buy the KVM more expensive version of this monitor, ie DELL U2724DE for my office, but now I know the KVM is based on DDPM software, I will buy the same cheaper U2724D to avoid troubles.

Too bad, this software bundle needs to be rewritten from scratch.

Hi @DELL-Chris M

here is the versions I've tested myself:

  • 2.0.1.16 works fine and does not have the issue ( installed from DDPM-Setup_2.0.1.16.exe )
  • 2.0.2.11 has the issue ( installed from DDPM-Setup_2.0.2.11.exe )
  • 2.0.3.9 has the issue ( installed from DDPM-Setup_2.0.3.9.exe )
  • 2.1.0.24 has the issue ( installed from DDPM-Setup_2.1.0.24.exe and updated )

I work in IT and buy DELL servers on a regular basis.

It seems DELL is outsourcing DDPM developpment? There is a huge gap between the hardware quality and DDPM's software quality. The final quality is the one of the weakest chain component, ie: the software in this case.

Despite this bug, DDPM should be light software based on KISS principle to minimize resources needs and bugs, else you'll discourage buying the hardware.

All should contact Dell Support via the Get Help Now chat option to create a unique Dell support case. If willing, reinstall the latest DDPM version 2.1.0.24. Then they will need the Dell monitor private Service Tag number, results of the DDPM diagnostic report, and monitor asset report as shown in the FAQ Windows OS DDM and DDPM.
