@Brian, Can't they just use the local desktop then?
You can't use your virtual desktop/session to burn disks (this isn't just a limit of vWorkspace, this applies to View, XenDesktop, etc) but you can trick the user into thinking they are or at the very least enable the user to burn disks...
It's quite timely that you have brought this up now... The trick is to use reverse seamless (RES Virtual Desktop Extender is the only solution that can do this - patented) which allows you to present local apps, a CD burning util for example, to the full screen virtual desktop/session. It's a pretty neat bit of software (we've just ordered 1000 licenses to start with).
However it doesn't natively support vWorkspace client YET but we're making a fair bit of progress in the right direction and RES and Quest have "engaged" with each other around support. I can discuss more if you wish to have a chat? Roberto Volo did mention this issue to me earlier and I know you have the "pleasure" of knowing him... Ask him for my number (around between 9 - 10 tomorrow morning) or ring the switch board.
@Matt - With standard RDP yes with RES, very close to getting vWorkspace working - it connects and presents local apps but there are some performance issues which i'm working on... You can use policy to control what local apps the user can access. We know with ealier version of vWorkspace it worked but now VDX is a standalone product there are some "config" issues to be resolved which we think are minor.
It's a complete cheat but solves the problem in the right situation and from what I have seen, is the only way you can have the desired result without using a USB CD drive.
RES is $15 RRP

As in burn stuff to a CD writer that is attached to the client device?
You could with our USB redirection. Just remember that USB traffic is very network sensitive so make sure that there is a good network between the ‘terminal’ and the virtual desktop.
What is the platform of the terminal?

Hi Michel
Yes as in burn to a CD writer, the Desktop is windows XP. They want to use the interanl CD as the students would pinch a USB connected device. VMware are claiming that they can do this in VMware View, not sure if this is true.

something we are looking at too..for some Use cases - CD writer / IDE devices to VDI,
how about this ?
would it be easier to get a IDE to USB adaptor and connect to the local device USB port of the local PC terminal internally ?? , that way the VDI will detect the CD writer

@Prit Very inventive
@Brian Lowe what are the end-points? Existing windows machines or re-purposed FAT Thin clients?
If Windows - can both end-point and virtual desktop/RDS/resource access the same file store (containing the data to be burnt)? - I'm thinking very out of the box now (needing a 3rd party (low cost) to complement vWorkspace) but have a feasible idea....

Dan - Are you doing this successfully today either with or without a 3rd party tool?

Hi Daniel
Thanks, I did meet the RES team a couple of years ago and was impressed with some of their tools. My hope then was to fully integrate Terminal Services and VDI but to include local Desktop Apps is really good. I spoke to Roberto yesterday and he did not mention RES otherwise the penny would have dropped. The good news is that I got the order for the Proof of Concept for the University yesterday so it looks like a trial for RES as well. Thank you Daniel a really great response.

No problem....
We'll put it down to Roberto having a "senior moment"
