Getting updated Connector

A couple of questions.

First off - we will have the latest Connectors available for our users soon, but when there is an new Connector...

Will the broker notify people when they connect that there is a new Connector?

Will the old Connector stop working?

Can the broker push out a message when people connect with the Connector notifying them of a new Connector?

I haven't been able to find these anwers... can anyone help?

Hi Sarah,

To answer your questions: The broker will not notify your users when a new version of a Connector is available/or prevent it from working. Once a new version of the Connector is available it will need to be deployed to each end point that you wish to install it on. You can do this manually or by using an existing packaging/software distribution method. Which of our Connectors are you using or plan to use?

We QA our Connectors to ensure that they are backward compatible with the current supported versions of the core vWorkspace product.

Thanks

If you use vWorkspace Web Access, then there is the possibility to notify the user automatically when a new connector version is available.

Yes and no. If you use Web Access you can distribute and update the Connector for Web Access which contains a slimmed down version of the Connector, but that only works 1) when using Web Access and 2) you are using Windows with IE and ActiveX enabled.

This will not work on any other platforms (e.g Linux, Mac) and does not allow for the updating of the full Windows Connector. So in other words, if you are using 'full' Connector functionality im afriad we cannot do this. If you are using Web Access and just Windows then you are in luck as Michel describes!

One other idea is that if you are using Web Access, you can add the Connector binaries to the download tabs and inform your users to download them from there, but you may just prefer to ditribute using some form of ESD.

Thanks

> Good point. You can even set a message telling people that there is a new version available and that they can/should dowload it.

okay to give a little more detail on what we are doing...

We have been using the Web Access since deploying our virtual computer labs.  We have decided to allow students/faculty/staff access to the vWorkspace Connector (like 7.2 for windows).  We will be writing up instructions for Mac, Linux, iPad, and Windows.  Our virual machines are open to 42K+ people.

So, since we are doing this for the students/faculty/staff - we don't have access to the machine that they will be installing the Connector on - so we can't upgrade the connector for them when a new version comes out.  And they might not necessarily go to the webpage to see if a new one is available.

I'm just wanting to make sure that if we upgrade our broker or a new Connectoer version comes out, that the previous Connector won't break.

Sarah,

We take great care to make our product backwards compatible with older connectors.  When adding a new feature that requires changes to the server components, we design backwards compatibility into the product.  In that past though, we have had some features that made it impossible to support older clients.  In those cases, we built in a switch that allowed the server component to operate in "legacy mode" to support older clients. This allowed the farm to be upgraded and migration of clients to occur gradually over a period of time.

So when upgrading your server components to the newest version of the product you can rest assured that your students/faculty/staff will not have to immediately upgrade to the newest version of the connector.  The previous version (as well as a few versions back) will work fine. That said, it is recommended to upgrade the connector software to get the latest features, improved performance and better support.
