DEL key on numpad causes machine to react as if has been pressed
Hi,
vWorkspace 7.2 MR1 and Windows server 2008 sp2 remote desktop hosts (ie: x86)
All servers have been virtualized using VMWare vSphere 4.1
Hardware HP blade centre type C
All storage on EMC connected by iSCSI
Users work with XPe thin clients of recent model HP
Often when users press the key on the num pad of a regular keyboard their session reacts as if has been pressed. A simple brings them back to their desktop.
Log off log on most of the time "solves" the problem but it can return at any given time.
Anybody experienced this before? Or does anyone have a suggestion?
Its not related to specific RD servers, nor to specific users
any help would be most welcom

Hello Paul,
I have tested this in a similar setup in my lab just now, I was not able to reproduce the behaviour by simply pressing the key from the number pad. I did find that if you have AltGr depressed at the same time as pressing the key then it would appear as though was pressed.
What are the regional settings used in your environment, are both the clients and the TS sessions using the same, i.e. English UK?
Have you been able to identify any applications that may be common to this issue, if not users or servers?
What is the version of the RDP client, check file C:\Windows\System32\mstscax.dll, on the XPe clients?
Also, sometimes in a remote session you can find the or key behaves as though stuck, or pressed, when this is not the case. A simple way to clear this is to use the following key sequence, , , , to clear. This will resolve the issue and may help for your users.

Thank you David for your reply
Thats part of the problem, you can't predict it and therefor not reproduce it
To answer your questions:
Serverside is english with dutch MUI installed that has been set as default
Client is English XP
No specific apps, users, servers, subnets or whatever that is a common factor (we're keeping records, but nothing obvious yet)
Version RDP is 6.1, latest possible version on XP anyway
The other thing you mention also happens and we found the same solution
Please don't tell me we have to convert to dutch XPe (is that even available?) or pure English Server OS

Hi Paul,
How often are the users reporting this problem affecting their sessions?
Is it only the key on the number pad that causes this kind of behaviour?
When it next happens can you see if there are other symptoms, such as pressing the key to see if all text is selected. This would imply that the key is stuck on. Please refer to this link for further information on keyboard shortcuts http://support.microsoft.com/kb/126449
Are your XPe clients at Service Pack 2 or 3. You will be able to upgrade them to RDP client 7.0 if they can be upgraded to SP3. This link has some further information http://support.microsoft.com/kb/969084
I am not suggesting that you change the language on the systems but wanted to ask as it may be a factor in why you are seeing this issue.

David

That was quick... again
We get a lot of users complaining about this. I've never heared them say antyhing about anything that would mean crtl is stuck. The system administrators have that problem on the management RD servers (which have 2008 R2 installed). What we do then is, beleive it or not, press and away it goes for a while. This doesn't happen that often though i'm glad to say cause the workaround is ridiculous.
Not sure about the SP status of the XPe clients, i'll look into that tomorrow when i get back to work.
thanks David

Just thought I'd post a reply, as I was having a nearly identical problem and found this thread via el goog. I never did find out what the issue was, but I was able to resolve it.
To be clear, the issue only presented with a single user (XP SP3) logging in to a TS application (MAS90 Accounting package) on Server 2008 R2. There are 6 other users accessing the TS application with either XP SP2 or SP3 who could not replicate the above issue. The only diffference I noted physically was the affected user has a model# Y-RAQ-DELL2 Dell bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo.
Just to see if it was the keyboard, without unpariing/unplugging the BT combo, I plugged in a standard Dell USB keyboard (#SK-8115). The hardware wizard popped to allow driver installation. I let it look online for drivers; I got some error message and it prompted for a disc; I aborted install. The SK-8115 worked anyway...and, did not have the 10-key 'Del' issue either. Even better, when I unplugged the SK-8115, the Y-RAQ-DELL2 worked properly as well.
As I just presented this solution minutes ago, I have not had the user reboot/re-log in. I'm not sure what will happen, YMMV.
