Colour Depth via Remote Desktop Protocol

Hi Guys,

Okay... we're had one of our radiographers down to look at vWorkspace and they've found a problem.

When viewing PACS images over RDP the colour depth of the session is only 5-bits of greyscale... and there's no enough quality to use vWorkspace for review of radiography images.

Question: Is it possible to increase the quality of the RDP session over the default?

N.B. This is rather important...

Hi Caleb,

The colour depth limitations are somewhat dependant on the OS, as per Lutz question. When making an RDP connection to a Windows XP/2003 host the maximum colur depth supported is 24bit. If the host is Windows 7/2008 then you can specify a colour depth upto 32bit.

It is possible to specify the colour depth for a connection on the vWorkspace client so you may need to increase this setting if not set to the correct value. There is also a Microsoft GPO option to limit the maximum colour depth which may be restricting your colour depth to a poorer quality. This link provides further details on configuring the maximum colour depth group policy option.

Hi Caleb,

what is the server-side OS in this case ?

Lutz.

How are your vWorkspace clients configured for colour depth settings, or if using Web Access what is the default setting?

With a Windows 2003 host server you will be able to achieve a maximum colour depth of 24 bit. EOP Graphics Acceleration will not change the colour depth settings.

This article provides details on how to set the colour depth policy settings for Windows 2003. I recall this may be limited to 16bit colour by default, unless you increase it using this policy setting. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323353

Sorry,

It's Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise

I've not got EOP graphics acceleration enabled, clients are WIndows 7 32bit.

Okay... I must have missed that setting in my Farm GPO... now set to 32bit, even though 2003 only supports 24-bit.

Out of interest, does anyone know how they make up 24-bit from the RGBA bits?

Okay... All working for my Windows Clilents now... phew!

I've now noticed another issue though... iPad clients don't seem to be able to connect at 24-bit. I'm currently looking at the problem but not havign an iPad to test with does seems a little shortsighted...

Hi Caleb,

Our iPad Connector User Guide states that 24-bit colour is supported when using an iPad, I can test this for you tomorrow morning if you don't find a solution before then.

Hi Caleb,

Were you able to identify the issue with the iPad not being able to connect using 24-bit colour settings. It is the setting that I use on my iPad and is working fine, what are the symptoms of your issue, an error or poor image quality?

Regards

David

All sorted... Seems the problem was the iPad Users.
