App Portal for MAC

We are just starting to play with the MAC client and so far I have to say I'm not overly impressed.

Few things that drive me a little crazy.

#1 - the whole X11 single session...not really helpful at all for publishing applications...only really good for publishing full desktop.

#2 - Lack of any progress bar when clicking on a published app.  Under my workspace I can't tell if I actually clicked it as I see nothing happen until voila, a desktop starts loading.

#3 - On 2 different systems after closing out of the Remote Desktop and X11, I can't seem to launch the desktop again..it just does nothing.  Not sure if its not closing out the session on the other side and won't reconnect or something.  Maybe thats my config issue..can't tell

#4 - After screensaver on local system kicks in...colors go to hell and you need to disconnect and reconnect...after dealing with #3...

#5 - Downloading a configuration file is not anabled on the MAC...works fine on the PC

#6 - You need to login with Username, Password and Domain on MAC....vs PC you can login with UPN (email format) and password

#7 - Fact the App Portal doesn't actually use SSL gateway, but uses an alternate port...kinda kills you in a secure environment.

So far those are what I've come up with...hopefully some are the result of configuration changes (although the PC version works great)

I think this might be an EOP xtream hangover. If you look at the management console, does the old session still show as "Active" instead of disconnected?

If so, try upgrading to 7.1 MR1 on the Connection Broker and TS/VDI as this issue should be fixed.

I agree!

"#1 - the whole X11 single session...not really helpful at all for publishing applications...only really good for publishing full desktop."

I wish the OS X client was 100% OS X native. X11 adds a delay to the desktop session launching. Not all users have X11 installed. I think it was only the default option with 10.6 maybe 10.5? We have many users still running 10.4 (for legacy app reasons) without X11.

"#2 - Lack of any progress bar when clicking on a published app.  Under my workspace I can't tell if I actually clicked it as I see nothing happen until voila, a desktop starts loading."

Yes very very annoying. Users end up going on a clicking frenzy!

"#3 - On 2 different systems after closing out of the Remote Desktop and X11, I can't seem to launch the desktop again..it just does nothing.  Not sure if its not closing out the session on the other side and won't reconnect or something.  Maybe thats my config issue..can't tell"

Can't say I've seen this.

"#4 - After screensaver on local system kicks in...colors go to hell and you need to disconnect and reconnect...after dealing with #3..."

Or this...

"#5 - Downloading a configuration file is not anabled on the MAC...works fine on the PC"

This would be fantastic!

"#6 - You need to login with Username, Password and Domain on MAC....vs PC you can login with UPN (email format) and password"

Yeah... I would like the ability for the Mac client to use kerberos authentication also! We use Quests Authentication Services for Mac policies and authentication.

"#7 - Fact the App Portal doesn't actually use SSL gateway, but uses an alternate port...kinda kills you in a secure environment."

Can't say I've tried...

I have some other grumbles too!

- The WAN experience for OS X is not very good! I often find that the on the LAN the GFX sometimes outperform the windows client.

- The mouse cursor often (if not always) is black! I've seen this on the Linux connector to. Very annoying if the desktop has a black background

- Lack of 7.1 client with EOP Xtream magic!

- No support for font smoothing which I personally think is a must for a Windows 7 desktop.

Our Mac users often feel like second class citizens as it is. We really need to give them a better experience when accessing desktops/apps as a service.

However... Having said that... At lease vWorkspace has a Mac client

Cheers,

Dan.

One of my test machines is a Virtualized MAC on VMWare workstation 7 (Shhh) and I also saw the Black cursor, but i thought it was just due to virtualization.  i agree its annoying.

I need to do more testing with my other MAC, but I don't have access to it all the time.  My primary MAC is a Duo Core (32bit) MAC with snow leopard so I can't run App Portal on it (Snow leopard install is x64, leopard is x86)...known bug and acknowledged and logged.

The EOP and font smoothing would be fantastic as well.

I think some of my issues could be configuration...if I get some time i will open a ticket and see if its just my virtualized Mac or the physical as well (I am sure it was but maybe not)....it could be a session timeout or something.

One interesting things from User guide - Features of MAC client - Sharing sessions for new applications when a session is already running.  - so, exactly how does that work when you can't run more then a single X11 session?

Yes, I agree its better then nothing, but I really hope its going to get better quick, especially with the damn iPAD (iTampon?)  gaining ground.  We've had 4 clients get an iPAD already and ask us if it works...I know they are trying to get a client out before end of year, but I hope its better then the OSX client.

iPads don't have X11 anyway so it will have to be a native iOS client

What's interesting about font smoothing is that once the session is active, the user can manually turn it on!

Cheers,

Dan.

The current Mac Connector is only supported on 10.5 onwards

Hello, I tested that on my Mac.

We're talking about a single session with the Terminal Server that you're connecting to.

For example,  I launched Calc from my 2003 TS.

This opens a session on the TS that you see in the X11 window.

I then launched Notepad. This used the same open session rather than taking up a seperate session on the TS.

So, in my X11 window I now see Calc and Notepad.

I'll have a play with some of your other issues too to see if I can do anying about them...  I see what you mean in issue 2 already

Thanks.

Hi andrew...I have updated everything to M1 last week.

I have checked the User sessions on the connection broker and made sure there were no lingering sessions on the TS Server.

Here is what happens when I click on the Remote Desktop published application (server info changed)

After a reboot I find it works and you can see the connection request going through...overall I think its something to do with my current MAC environment vs something serious.

I've had my friend test with his MAC and he is saying its working great...
