VPLEX storage volume unclaim
Hi
Whats the best way to unclaim a storage volume. Can we just tear down a virtual volume which brings it to storage volume to unclaim or do it step by step like virtual volumes->devices->extents->storage volumes and then unclaim.
Is there a logical explanation if not to choose direct tear down of virtual volume ?
Thanks,
Damal

This is the procedure we use:
#1. "Tear down" the virtual volume
#2. "Unclaim" the device
#3. Remove Masking of the device from storage array to the VPLEX
#4. Rediscover Array
#5. Forget the volume (via CLI or you can now use the GUI - Checkbox when performing an array discovery)
(If using the GUI, you may have to perform a discovery a couple of times before it will forget the device.)

Thanks for the high level steps
I was wondering are there any issues related to Tear Down of Virtual volume so i can choose to do it the other way, like delete virtual volume -> delete device -> device extent and then unclaim storage volume

Hi Rdamal,
Just Adding on before tear down please check Virtual Volume Tree by using "show-use-hierarchy"
Steps specified by "Jbowlingfts" works well and its upto your choice Tear Down Does same steps as you do while unclaiming step-by-step.
#1. "Tear down" the virtual volume
#2. "Unclaim" the device
#3. Remove Masking of the device from storage array to the VPLEX
#4. Rediscover Array
#5. Forget the volume (via CLI or you can now use the GUI - Checkbox when performing an array discovery)
(If using the GUI, you may have to perform a discovery a couple of times before it will forget the device.
