Vostro 7500: Hot and fan runs when closed and in sleep mode

Are there any known fixes for this issue, it seems to be a pretty common problem. While using the computer everything seems fine, but close it and the fan comes on constantly and it gets really hot. Open it and the fan will go off.

Dell Cares keeps trying to reach out to me on here... but when I goto reply it says I've reached my limit.

Update September 28, 2021 = A DELL-Cares agent setup service to replace the motherboard.

Hey, recently read your message about the system automatically goes to the diagnostic mode.
Just want to ask, Are you facing issues similar to "Processor Fan not responding" and 0rpm speed of your CPU fan. Here, I am facing this issue since last afternoon and nothing got better ever since then, I tried every possible way that's mentioned in the blogs and community posts but nope, still the diagnostic mode detects one or more errors, and I am completely exhausted now.

Please leave a reply if you're in the same boat as I am right now

I have this issue as well.  I leave my computer closed most of the time plugged into two desktop monitors.  After no-use of 2hrs it goes into sleep mode automatically (power settings).  When I come back to computer to wake it up, sometimes the computer is very HOT with fans at 100%.   The computer does not respond and it forces me to power cycle.  Very annoying.  It then goes thru hardware checks and finds nothing wrong.

I called Dell this morning and they told me I need to turn off computer instead of allowing it to go to sleep automatically.  I don't think this is a real solution the problem.  I like the convenience of not having to remember to turn off the computer when I'm done using it.

If the problem continues, I plan to keep bugging Dell and getting a real solution. This computer is only 3 months old and has been doing this on occasion since it was brand new.

My IT team and I believe that on the Vostro 7500 this has to do with its support for Modern (Connected) Standby in Windows 10. You'll see this if you run powercfg /a, and it means that the laptop is using a special kind of standby mode that lets certain things (i.e. Wi-Fi) continue running during "sleep":

Beyond that, I'm not sure whether S0 mode is not working correctly, whether certain drivers or apps are responsible, etc. but we often have Vostro 7500s which:

  • Crash on resume from sleep, or
  • Have constantly high temperature and fan usage in sleep mode (both on AC and battery power)

And lastly, it doesn't look like the latest versions of Windows 10 give you the ability to disable your Wi-Fi during sleep as previous ones did.

If you look at other models of laptops experiencing this, some people are trying to use various registry settings and hacks to re-enable S3 mode, which isn't offered as a BIOS option for the Vostro. Doing this usually causes more problems than it solves, such as inability to use Fn keys or Wi-Fi after resume.

Unfortunately, we've found no quick fixes, but you can run powercfg /energy at the command line to get a report on your energy configuration and see if, for example, you have any old drivers that might be causing problems with standby.

I have Vostro 3500 11gen and facing a similar issue with the latest bios 1.6.0 later upgraded to 1.7.0. When the laptop goes to sleep, after 20 to 30 minutes, the laptop fan starts to spin 100% with the CPU area heating up. The laptop does not respond after that unless I press the power button. After powering the laptop it enters the diagnostics prompting with the below image. When I do the memory scan, it does not detect any issues. I have tried changing the RAM but still the same issue. This is becoming very upsetting because my unsaved work is gone.

We bought 4 of these units and 3 of them have the same exact issue.  they randomly reboot and do a diagnostic - they run so hot it's like you could cook your breakfast on them.

3 out of our 4 that we purchased are doing this behavior in this thread.

The same issue here. My laptop was so hot that I thought the plastic would melt. My bios' version is 1.5.1 (04.12.2020).

Hi.  I am hoping that someone from Dell actually monitors this community.  I am so disappointed and disgusted in the support I have received from Dell for this similar ongoing problem (I have Pro Support). They have replaced my initial Vostro 7500 with a refurbished one (this has been going on for almost a year), and the refurbished one has been sent back 3 times and had almost every part replaced.  I am now insisting that they replace this with a new and compatible or better laptop since I have been without a reliable business laptop for months. Today, after receiving the runaround again with promised return email updates and phone calls, I am not told via email that they will replace it with a similar model by . . . .  November 24, 2021! And, they didn't provide the model number or specs, so the saga continues.  As I continue to limp along, I have to shut it down when I'm away for more than a few minutes. Used Dell Lattitude Laptops for years in government; but, now as a 2 person business, this is inexcusable! Sorry for the rant.
