Vostro 3590 i5-10210U Battery charging issue

Hello, I have a Vostro 3590 used as a backup. Before the fault was visible, the laptop suddenly powered off, a disticnt click of the speaker at the time. It powered up again and though all was OK, however, the laptop became progressively slower (viewing vis Task Man, process speed had been throttled down). Also noticed that the battery was not charging, with BIOS also stating this.

The usual items were substitued, battery, charger and the jack socket connector eliminated. I note that if the battery is disconnected, the speed ramps back up. So it appears that the laptop thinks its working on a low battery and throttles down the speed to preserve power.

Anyone had this issue before I dive in with my meter - obviously its a motherboard component issue, probably a capacitor or MOSFET (taking into account the original shutdown). I've seen some schematics PQ2 and assoc components would be a starting point. Just wonder if there is a stock fault for this. Thanks

If you haven't, unplug the system and disconnect the battery from the system board.  Hold the power button for 30 sec.  Then reassemble and try again.

If the system still won't charge the battery, you're likely correct in your diagnosis.  However, before investing much time in a repair, realize that mainboards for this system are not that expensive -- around $100, perhaps less.  And even if you identify the faulty component, you will very likely need a donor board from which to harvest replacement parts, as they're not readily available unless you live in or near Southeast China -- and even then, you may face challenges sourcing replacement parts.

@ejn63  Thank you for your reply. Yes I have already eliminated residule charge within the motherboard (with battery disconected). This can be fixed for $1 and not $100, I'm a UK old school qualified electronics engineer (although no longer practising). Once a component is identified and is stated not available, then research to the said device's operating parameters and use a substitute device which matches or near higher (never lower).  Many years ago there used to be equivalent books, nowadays these can be found on-line. Just posted ahead of dismantling in order to aquire any known-failed replacements. Thanks again for your reply

If the component is a capacitor, yes -- sourcing the part will be easy.

If it's a MOSFET, not so -- you will almost certainly need a donor board for that.
