Vostro 1550, Battery charging level is kept, but not increasing with AD adapter connected

Recently after some BIOS updates I get the warning that my AC adapter may not be suitable.
Battery charging level is actually kept, but not increasing with AD adapter connected.
This means bending pin etc. can be excluded as a cause.
Even with a new battery replaced the situation does not change --> no battery issue.
WIth AC adapter disconnected battery level is reduced, for example to 78%.
After AC adapter connection again chargiong level is kept again to 78% this time.
Once the battery level went down to below 10% without AC adapter connection, and the charging worked to go up to 100%.
Then again the same situation above comes.
Charging level is always kept with AC adapter connected, and charging is started if the charging level goes down to below 10%.
Thus I have a doubt on BIOS.

Yes, as I wrote earlier, it could be a damaged connector or a damaged jack, or even just dirty, or a motherboard issue. Given what you've tried, I suspect the motherboard. But, try these steps:

  • Clean out the connector with Q-tip and 99% alcohol, and do the same to the jack.
  • Unplug AC cord and reconnect and try again.
  • If you can, borrow a genuine Dell adapter that you know is good and try it.
  • If a known-good adapter still won't work, then you could try replacing the jack. You can buy genuine Dell jacks with power cable at Parts-People, here's one for your model laptop.
  • If a known-good Dell adapter doesn't work and a new jack doesn't solve it, then unfortunately you'd need to replace the motherboard.

Parts-People has genuine Dell adapters for your system.

Look in BIOS. Does BIOS recognize the charger as a genuine Dell AC adapter? If not, then it will charge at maximum  65-watts. When your system is powered on, 65-wattsmay be sufficient to maintain battery level and power the system, but not sufficient also to charge the battery.

If you know the battery is good, and if the charger is recognized on another Dell system but not yours, then I'd suspect a bent/damaged charging jack or an issue with the charging circuit on the motherboard.

So, if you're able, try the charger on another Dell system, and try that system's charger on yours/

If you power off the system and leave the charger connected with AC power, will the battery charge?

Thank you very much for this really valuable and helpful posting.

The warning message at the startup itells something like BIOS does not recognize the charger as a genuine Dell AC adapter. Then your comment marches.

If I power off the system and leave the charger connected with AC adapter, battery is not charged amd the charging level is kept.

Is the mother board not involved In this case ?

Does this mean a bent/damaged charging jack is more and more possible ?

At this moment I have no possibility to try on another DELL system. I have  Inspron but it has a different type of charging jack.

Maybe I should try a new AC adapter, but I cannot find the same type, 0N6M8J.

Do you know which AC adapter is compoatibe ?

Thank you very much.

Now the battery is charged up to 100%

What I did was removing the battery and the connector for a while to release static electricity, and cleaning the connector and the jack as recommended.

Now I can use this Vostro further.

Mother board change is no option for me for this more than 10 years old PC.
